Tammy Abraham is not good enough.

More so, I don’t think he suits Emery’s tactics.  But agree he is not a significant upgrade on Watkins to justify the likely fee.

I’m doubtful of a major splurge this summer on household names. I think we’re more likely to see players in the Moreno profile arrive; those that may not be that well know. And perhaps those who are unwanted elsewhere that you think ‘why have we bought him?!’. But both will do a job in the way Emery wants to play. I reckon by august we won’t really be sure what to expect for the following season but ultimately we’ll surprise quite a few and have a good season.

I think a lot depends on what Emery's long term formation is. If it's 4-4-2, then Abraham would be a huge upgrade on Bailey.

My priorities and suggestions based on Football Manager scouting circa 2005:

Sell Konsa; buy Pau Torres (say minus £15m).  That gives us three CBS and Chambers.  Full backs are okay for this window.
Sell Nakamba and Sansom buy Guendouzi (say minus £20m).  loan Tim and A Ramsey for 6 months
Sell Bailey; buy …Williams? Johnson? Dembele/raphina? Bowen if West Ham went down? (Say minus £40m). Cameron and Duran to be impact subs.
Plus £25m on random wonder-kids and a reserve keeper, equals a net spend of £100m

Keeps the squad lean and provides some space for the youngsters to grow.

This is pretty much where I am. Expecting 3 or 4 transfers in - all done before the middle of July, maybe 1 or 2 out (in addition to players currently on loan), mostly players I've not heard of in the £10m-£20m range.

As Smiker said.
Tammy Abraham nostalgia is mind boggling. He scored goals in the championship and so this Lewis Grabban and no one wants him back. He didn’t do much whenever he was given an opportunity By Chelsea and has not exactly set the world on fire at Roma. Ollie Watkins is now ahead of him in as a PL striker.

21 in 58 for Chelsea (when given a chance) and 23 in 64 for Roma. A bit weird comparing him to Lewis Grabban.
His scoring pattern with Chelsea and Roma is similar, and indicates his goals dry up once the defenders work him out.

Lo Celso is an Emery man. Think he could be one.

It's not him who's been worked out for Roma this year, it's Mourinho.

Really does feel like the likes of Mourinho and Conte are yesterdays men in football terms

For the wide forward role (replacing Bailey/Bert in the team) one of Johnson, Bowen or Barnes would be excellent - possibly dependent on which (if any) go down from Forest, West Ham and Leicester. All very good players IMO.

If their only job is to challenge for fourth they might get away with it, but the truth is both Spurs and Roma should be doing a lot better this year if you look at the clubs around them and have only been made to look at a certain level by the failures of their competitors.

I thought that Mourinho won a European Trophy recently with Roma

The only team he did not win a trophy with was Spurs, and he was sacked on the Monday before they played in the league cup final (my Spurs mate, tells me the reason he was sacked was to save Levy paying Jose a bonus)

He knows what needs to be done to win - unfortunately his style of football is boring.

Oddly Mourinho found a way to be more attacking last year, which was largely why he did pretty well. The trouble is it's not in the same league of detail or sophistication as the Napoli style, say, let alone a Man City or what have you, so it was found out despite the return of Spinazzola.

Mourinho, certainly. Conte won the league with Inter two years ago, and then got Spurs to 4th in his first season last year, which is about par for them a the moment. He's not a bad manager, he's just a sandwich short of a picnic.
