Just had a Vietnam style flashback to that 'Aston Villa that's who" thing the school kids did. Nice idea and all that, but bloody hell, I wanted to hack my ears off after hearing it.

TBAR is never sung any more, which is a shame as that did feel like our song.

It is a shame. No better anthem, as anyone at the Norwich League Cup quarter final in ‘84 will attest.

Ha! I've mentioned before, on the Sutton Lions coach we sang it non-stop all the way back to Brum. Even when we stopped off at a pub in the middle of no where, joining up with a few other Villa coaches, it never stopped.  Mental night but right up there up as one of my favourite away days.

I like the fact that we don't have an anthem and would hate anything to be imposed on the fans rather than growing organically. One listen to what Arsenal do before home games will tell you how bad in can turn out.

DLBIA was of it's time and was taken up by chance due to the circumstances at the time, but that time has passed. Ditto Sweet Caroline.

The lights and music thing does nothing for me compared to a simple outing for TFAUSL, but then I'm hardly the target audience given my misanthropic tendancies. I love the Bells, my finest memory of it is us raising the roof with it in the old Anfield Road Stand just before Deano scored the winner but if the fans don't want to know then so be it.

Oh yes, you can hear it clear as day on the old MOTD footage

It's a real shame we don't have an anthem, most other teams do. HEITS is as close as we get to being uniquely ours these days.
HEITS is uniquely our but is no anthem. Like others, I relate strongly to TBAR since it was a 1970's anthem. I also like another 1970's song:
When you're smilin', when you're smilin'
The whole world smiles with you
When you're laughin', when you're laughin'
The sun comes shinin' through
But when you're cryin', you bring on the rain
So stop that cryin', be happy again
Keep on smilin', 'cause when you're smilin'
The whole world smiles with you

We used to belt that out very effectively and I'm not aware of other clubs singing it.

I remember it well. We tended to replace "whole world " with "Holte End", and extended the final "you"  to "you ooh ooh ooh...." ( it sounded better than it looks written down!)

While I wouldn’t suggest it for us, I like the Liquidator.

Mine too. A load of us went early and found a Mary Celeste-style snooker club with a bar and no staff anywhere to be seen. We were playing snooker and helping ourselves to free beer all afternoon, until everything stopped and we put the telly on to watch Grange Hill.

I think the Villa arse-slasher struck again that day as well.

The season after MON walked the club tried to bring back Bells Are Ringing but it backfired.
if I remember we sung it at Norwich constantly all the way through it was a night game back in the early eighties I think

Did all the posts above remind you of it?

Totally agree TBAR should be our anthem but from what I hear from afar its died out over the last 10-15 years.

However, when I used to go my issue with it was it was always sung to quickly, especially the the bit before 'best in the land'. Knowin, goin, showin was always literally on top on each other, slow it down and it works.

I went to the recording of that on the Holte End steps. It generated a lot of enthusiasm but when they played it before the home game the editing was awful. It started with the church bell tolling as if for a funeral. Appropriate really as it died a death after that.

After the mismanaged attempt by the club some years ago can I make a request to revive The Bells Are Ringing? I don’t think that any song sums us up better now than “the Holte End smiles with you”. It contains neither swearing nor reference to any other team so would be acceptable to all, whatever age and the words are easy to pick up. I am certainly smiling now.

Jesus I was just thinking the same thing the other day but in my befuddled middle aged state actually couldn’t remember the words.

I’d completely forgotten about this song. Has it been wiped from our collective consciousness?. I have to confess when we got to the Knowin, showin bit I mumbled along, never entirely sure what I was singing.
