To play a side who had drawn with Liverpool, turned over Chelsea 4-1 and knocked out a decent Arsenal side out of the league cup  without an away win the whole season. Having the two wider attacking options both side-lined with illness, to adjust the strategy to suit Ings at short notice, showed what a difference Emery makes. Not the prettiest of performances but you don't gain points just for being a pretty team.

Looked like a hand ball for a penalty in the first half for us from the corner too be fair and why wasn't Dunk booked for his scything down of McGinn? I get the red card is double jeopardy but nothing at all.

Anyway, 3 points, a bit of mid table mediocracy and Carragher upset his pal Stevie Me failed. What more could you ask for Christmas bearing in mind the mess we were against Fulham.

I did think that when we scored, Carragher's over the top "the Aston Villa players need to look at themselves" probably had a double meaning, the disgusting gobbing Scouse prick.

I forgot about that handball, when he gently volloyballed it out and away from danger, not a peep from Carragher than.

Didn't see the match as stuck in rural Queensland this week, so reliant on the threads here for input. Filtered through a fair bit of local Bunderberg rum am pleased with the result and the battling nature of the performance.

It seems we finally have a top class manager, and even better, one that manages games to get results.

A month of working with the squad with us a win off top six - wouldn't bet against us making the Europa league places. Going to enjoy the wprld cup much more now we are able to look up the table rather than over our shoulders. Wolves being bottom makes it even better too.

Is it not comprehendible to spitty  that players would work harder to a system and game plan they believe in

Kamara's yellow irked me most. Both players had their feet up, Kamara gets to the ball first, their player goes down like he's shot and they get a free kick and a yellow card shown. And on the Guardian match thread the reporter says he's lucky it was not worse, wtf? It wasn't even a foul

The Mings one was similar wasn't it? Won the ball, but booked anyway.

Now he did, but he pulled the player back before exectuing the clean tackle. I don't have a problem with that, pulling shirts should be a yellow because it's just plain cheating.

But a few minutes later that prick (he's a prick now, I've seen enough of him) March got tackled cleanly by Digne who came out with the ball, he clearly pulled his shirt but Digne got away only for him to catch him up and clatter him from behind, but no card for that or that carthorse for the penalty.

Yep, I could live with the Mings one if that by March and the one by Caicedo a few minutes later were both yellows and if he'd booked Dunk for the penalty which was a clear professional foul to ensure even if he didn't win the ball there was no chance McGinn was getting back on it. Seeing Mings booked and 3 fouls that were at least as bad all go unpunished was what made it so annoying.

Jesus wept, TalkSport bringing on Howard Webb to talk about our time wasting, the penalty shout and emi martinez antics. Get over it already and talk about Ronaldo or something.

Southern Trains!! The sooner we renationalise our railways the better. No trains to Brighton from London Bridge. Trains from Blackfriars all cancelled, with no notice. Only trains to Brighton were from Victoria. Except there were none by the time we got there from Blackfriars. Had to go to Gatwick and change from there. I’ve never had an easy journey to Brighton - that Friday night fiasco being the worst - which is a shame because once you get to the ground it’s great.

Any road up, a win’s a win. Let the opposition worry about how we went about it

We stayed in Lewes, drove down the night before. Met a few Villa in a pub whilst watching Wolves capitulate. Only hassle was the journey round the M25 on the way back, still only about 4 hours from queuing at the station by the ground home.

… and met chrisw1’s brother.

which Carragher should understand - didn't he say as much when comparing Liverpool with dull as fuck tactics under Houllier and Benitez he agreed and thrived with to Erksson dull as fuck tactics which he didn't

Didn't the ref play 9 minutes added time to compensate for it?

Carragher was terrible all game. He literally groaned in exasperation with one of Brightons few chances. He also said all through the game, literally the whole game, how much Brightons players were more comfortable on the ball compared to ours!! It was not stop and so bloody obvious. His mate got the tic tac because the whole thing was going to shit, old Carra needs to get over it.
