Rory, you miss my point. I think you’d really enjoy the other one (Gangsters, Geezers & Mods) and that’s the one I was making you aware of. As you’ve been good enough to shell out for King City, please allow me to send you a copy of the former. Think of it as a special offer.

It never pisses me off more to see Africans and south East Asian people following the sky four for no other reason than they’re successful and are on telly a lot.
Take it you would have an issue with those in Australia
And New Zealand as well ?
What about europeans ? The americas and the rest of Asia.

Not sure why you're choosing to single out Africans and South East asia!

It's a good job there was no internet around in 1960-63ish, you would be amazed at the level of fawning by the media over 'Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur'.  As anyone who was around at that time will surely attest to.

It’s an interesting debate, why does anybody support any team?? For me my dad was a fan and he started taking me from the age of 8. We lived in Kingstanding but I moved away with the RAF but my son also supports Villa as does his son having never lived in Birmingham. I’d like to think I’d have supported Villa no matter where I came from. But what if you came from a town with no team and no family football background?? How would you choose a team to support??

It is an interesting debate and one possibly deserving of its own thread, “Why do you support The Villa ?”. I live roughly halfway between Manchester and Oldham. My dad follows Man Utd (he’s from Newton Heath) and my mum is Manchester City (she’s from Levenshulme, a stones throw from where Maine Road stood). I don’t know which way I would have leaned but my fate was decided by seeing a picture of Ray Graydon, resplendent in claret & blue with a rampant lion upon his chest. To quote David Bradley, “you don’t choose Aston Villa, Aston Villa chooses you”.

It's an interesting one, as i would loosely be described as someone who supports villa despite no strong links to birmingham. The reason i started following villa was a combination of being a good team in the early 90s and having a number of irish players at the time. Being given a load of villa match programmes by Eamonn Deacy (through my neighbour) helped solidify my support, so was hooked from then. I think it's fair to say that i couldn't be described as a glory hunter, but i'm a bt less inclined to have a go at out of town support for other teams, as it would be very hypocritical.

Depends on the reason. If you just pick a team because they win all the time, you're still a wrong 'un.

Agreed. I don't follow much European football, but the two teams I look out for are Fiorentina (because of their colours) and Freiburg, because I visited and loved the city. They're both pretty shite, but who cares?

I met a lad at university from Devon, his local team were Exeter and he supported them, but he wanted some kind of investment in the newfangled PL, and from a child his PL team was Sheff Weds because he liked the owl. That's something I could believe and get behind.

Freiburg are second in the league, you ol' glory hunter!

This season has been a one-off decent one, admittedly 😉

I've often felt sorry for Glory Hunters, they miss out on so much, in particular that feeling of a connection, of local pride, working a living alongside your deadly rivals. The latter is a double edge sword, you're sure to run into a 'Nose after one of their victories but then the reverse makes it all worth it.

I remember travelling back down the M6 in my first season following us away as a green 16 year old and seeing the illuminated Tandy sign at Walsall indicating that we were nearly home, swiftly followed by the Rotunda as we swept into Town proud as a peacock with 3 points in the bag. And now 30 odd years later that wonderful view of the City from the crest of Selston Road, stunning at night and of course made all the more beautiful by a win, toasted in one of the City's most historic pubs.

Bumping into Villa fans on holiday and discovering that they drink local or live around the corner but you've never met them before. People hearing your accent and immediately enquiring about which team you support. The badinage exchanged at work and in the pub with rivals down to the most pathetic arguments about where the support comes from and who the fuck drinks in Town.

With respect to those who fell in love with the Club from afar, part of supporting Villa for me is being from Brum but for all of us it's the downs that make the ups so marvelous, something you actively avoid in glory hunting.

I don't feel the slightest bit sorry for a Glory Hunter . They made their bed they can lie in it.
The bullshit that most of them come out with as well boils my piss.
" My dogs auntie had a flat in Salford in the 70's."
I can talk to a mancunian United supporter if I have too ( even if they are so far up the own arses) , but have no wish to talk football with a Glory Hunter.

Ther is a huge difference between non local supporters and the typical glory hunter.
The serpentine car park on match day would have coaches from Evesham Pershore Moreton in the Marsh Cheltenham Leamington Spa Stafford the list goes on.
Those traveler's passed and had been passed on the legacy of supporting The Villa.
It’s something to be proud of that Villa have always been the team of the Midlands.

Hope you enjoy it mate. If so, you should read my book. All the best stories are in there.

Send me the link and I'll buy it, mate!

I'm sure it's great, but may I venture to say that I doubt it's on display at Worcester Waterstones.

https://www.olddogbooks.net/shop/olddogbooks/gangsters-geezers-and-mods/

It’s on sale in Carnaby Street and I’ve got another one in Waterstones…

https://www.waterstones.com/book/king-city/stephen-pennell/9780750996280

Done

If it's shit, I expect my money back  ;)

You’re a star mate, but you haven’t bought the ‘‘moody geezers’ one.

Pm me your address and I’ll send you a freebie.

So your name is not Percy Pennell?  Or are you copying Mary Ann Evans with pseudonym?!
