What was also impressive is the type of goals Villa scored on Thursday night. They took a 2-0 lead from just 0.15 xG from the two shots, showing the clinical mood they are in right now.

This is why, although xG is a more than usual analytical tool, I can't quite take it fully seriously. Tielemans goal was a one on one with the keeper a few yards out. I'd expect a player to be converting that a lot more than 15/100

but the entire basis of the stat is that players in that sort of position have historically (since they start collecting the data) scored 15% of the time. I agree though that sometimes the values feel really low. I like xG as a stat, I just think too many people misunderstand it try to use it to show things that it isn't designed for and ignore some of the assumptions and limitations that it has.

How does it measure the difficulty though, in terms of how the ball comes to a player, for example.

A player in that position, especially a striker, with the ball at his feet, would have a higher expectation to score than a defender, for example. Also, McGinn's pass was amazing, but it did require some lovely skills from Yuri to get it under control so he could shoot. Making it way more difficult than if he'd just dribbled it into that part of the box himself.

Is that all taken into account by xG?

Some of it. The position of the player (defender, etc) isn't taken into account because it's not meant to be based on individual skill assessments, just averages. This is why, as I've said before, I'd expect most strikers to to do slightly better than xG.

How the ball comes to a player is split in a few ways with things like: is the ball on the ground or in the air, do they need to take a touch to create a shooting chance, whether the ball is in front or behind them and if there's a deflection on the pass.

The pass was perfect and he was shaping to sweep it in first time I think but it just took a knick of the defenders heel meaning he had to re-adjust which he did really well

He did. But that was the point of my question. Does xG take into account the fact that the ball takes a slight deflection on the way to the goal scorer, etc. etc.

The post above explains what it does and doesn't account for pretty well though.

Never heard of it, is it considered a bad omen to win the Utilita award the week before you face the team they sponsor?

The normal Villa curses don't seem to apply to Unai.

Emery has said before Luton "We have to analyse deeply and prepare our game plan, adapting to them and respecting them. Then we have to impose our idea and try find their weakness with our capacity to build our structure offensively"

Is the thinking no Cash and Konsa at right back ?
Emery has talked about rotation and players being ready and preparation for all players so Dendocker could be another to be given his chance?
This would help deal with physical play of Luton

West Ham are big and physical and we smashed them back to east London. And they have loads more overall talent. We execute the game plan Emery has for us tomorrow and Luton will leave Villa Park the way the previous 11 PL opponents have.

Actually, I've done some research to learn about Luton's flaws and things could look promising for Matty Cash
Their left side is extremely weak area in my analysis

For insight, I did enlight the forum on the Diaby thread
Furthermore, because of Luton's defects on the left side, Cash should have some offensive fun raid down the right tomorrow v Luton.

As  I say a result of my analysis, I believe Diaby or Bailey will score a spectacular goal.
Whether it's a dribble into the area or a screamer at the end.
Cash could be getting in on the action, and if he does, you read it here as I've offered foresight. That's extremely encouraging so maybe he will play.
Now like to think I'm a good student of the game so will see how we get on right side attack and goal threat .

I only suggested Cash not playing because of the physical issue and the rotation that Emery talked about.
May we all be blessed with sharing insights.

Up the Villa!

He has done a lot of it. He even told us forwards have scored against them in the Watkins thread. He still hasn't told us who Diddy Man is though or whoever he is arsing on about there,
