We are certainly not short of chiefs

Would be worse if we had too many chefs.

I can just imagine Ron Saunders being told he had to work with that lot.

A good pre-season and I'm sure he'd make a good team out of them and he'd definitely tell MacPhee to get his hair cut.

MacPhee's hair would have ben considered quite tidy back then.

Gigachad Ron. You'd fucking think twice before asking for a payrise, wouldn't you?

He was nails wasn't he?  I bet he intimidated most players

Too bloody right. Imagine looking like that in the 70s when diet and fitness training consisted of only having a couple of pints and just the one fag before kick off.

Charlie Aitken was the same.

Loved that interview when (I think it was) Newbon asked him for a smile after we’d won the league.

“Life is not about smiling Gary”.

Haha! I think only the Villa fans got it. Saunders was hilarious but could be extremely dry when all around, with a few exceptions (Clough, Shankley) were slapstick. Different times. He knew the media needed him more than he needed the media.

I reckon that Rodri is the unsung hero in that list. Having a coach who is there specifically to help each player improve individually will have played a massive part in the improvements we've seen in most of the players.

Didn't Mings talk about him in an interview? Something to the effect that he saw him talking to the strikers, then he came over to him. Started talking to him, and Mings suddenly realised that this guy knew more about his position than he did and that he wasn't a striker coach.

Great managers and a few more could be added from that era

Yes, it's detailed in The Athletic article.

I used to hate him for his tactical fouls and of course scoring the winning goal that means Manchester bloody City now have a "European Cup" to their name, but if he's improving all our players individually, Rodri is fine by me.

Older than that?  He was 42 when he took over in 1974 that picture is around then I think maybe ‘75 Charlie is still playing for us so must be no later than 1976.
