I'm still not sure I can let myself believe yet. Genuinely in the top what, 15 managers or so in the world?

For once, in their prime, Villa have gone and got the best available. PSG is an interesting barometer. Better than Poch, Ancelotti and Tuchel there on like for like record, and realistically 90 minutes of Messi madness killed their champions league run after the 4-0 home win. On paper, he's better than Poch even. And he's got a point to prove, he's got the fire. Dead chuffed.

It's always puzzled me, is his surname one of those coincidences where a name will pop up in different place e.g. Lee in Ireland and Hong Kong. Or does he have a random British ancestor (or Emerys here have a random Basque ancestor)?

It's from southern France originally. My aunt did the whole family tree thing a few years back and we had 'relatives' in France, Spain (specifically Basque and Catalan) and loads on Corsica, was 10-12 generations back though.

Cheers. That’s made me a smidgen less ignorant.

There is a massively over used gif on twitter of a bearded fellow nodding and smiling knowingly. This appointment is one of the few times that gif is truly appropriate.

This for me is so important. Away from the London media microscope he can be his own man, no distractions and focus on what he's good at.

And those ungrateful tarquins at Arsenal lost a very good manager that laid the foundations for Arteta's success.  When I thought he had been a failure I had not realised how close he had got them to the top 4 and the final etc.

I was only speaking to an Arsenal season ticket holding friend on Friday evening and I asked for his thoughts on Emery.

His reply was quite laughable..."Awful..even when we got up to a 15 game unbeaten run I had to drag myself to the ground".

I was sold on the 15 game unbeaten run. Which went up further I think?

Agree. My one concern about Poch was that motivation, he was my first choice but he seemed jaded towards the end at Spurs. Having that clear fire to leave a comfortable role to come back to prove yourself is huge.

He's really likeable, always happy to have a joke with the press.  There's a clip where he answered a reporters phone when it rang during a conference.

I really respect that he continued to conduct all interviews in English even though he was being mocked a bit, and has continued to try to improve.  So long as he can get a few results fairly quickly I think fans will love him.

He reminds me a bit of Ranieri, and you're right, I think we'll love him.

Chuffed with his.

He's going to beat those Red tramps in his first game isn't he. Brilliant.

I don't profess to follow Arsenal intently, but he seemed to have a lot of problems the year he left. Ozil was being a bellend for a start.

Break a ridiculous record in your first game would be a great start, following it up by knocking them out of the cup would be fucking magic.

Ozil was a prick. Still is probably.

Let's hope our players behave like gentlemen!

I think he was suffering in the same way as Arteta did, big names not performing, youngsters talented but inconsistent. His pain paved the way for Arteta who was also on the brink at one point.

He was also succeeding Wenger, a club legend. That kind of role is virtually impossible from the start.

Not sure how he's going to do following on from Gerrard then. ;)

I've heard he wants to change the walk-on music to RHCP...
