So looks like Fred will be on the bench now then

As for the game, will be very lively at the start with the anthem being played and hopefully we can come out of the blocks and be on front foot early.

Yeah, because if there's one thing that guarantees a great atmosphere, it's the national anthem 😉

3-1

I might need a toilet visit a couple of minutes before kick off
Because it's that fucking hard to sit on your hands and keep you mouth shut during a national anthem?

I've seen international games against Wales, Scotland, France, Ireland & Germany (amongst others) and have no problem just acting like a normal human being when opposition anthems are played.  Are you really that immature that you can't do the same?

And no, I'm not a Royalist, I'm entirely ambivalent about the Royal family.  I'm just grown up enough to show a minutes respect when it's asked for.

Wow, Chris I didn’t mean to offend! Personally I would rather not join in the anthem, and when I don’t have people (Villa fans at Wembley v Arsenal, call me all kinds of names and be generally quite shitty to me and my family during the game) have a pop. So I will remove myself, whilst being sad on a personal level that someone has died, but not agreeing with the monarchy, joining in. I am sensible enough to “sit on my hands”

The quality of the song isn't in question.  It's the willingness of people who live and presumably make a living in this country to be prepared to, at the very least, just shut the fuck up and show a bit of respect for about 60 seconds, whatever the wider view on the Royal familiy.

Fuck the jug eared, tax dodging, pro-hunting arsehole and his shitey song. He has done precisely nothing to earn my respect.

This! But I won’t boo, or jeer or do anything. I will do the best thing and remove myself from this. But that upsets some people as well.

Anyway hope for a good 2-0 win

I plan to turn up after the anthem is over. Have had arguments with fans like chrisw, who can't bear that anyone else doesn't share their opinion, at games before and it puts you on edge. I'd rather miss that unpleasantness by arriving just as the match kicks off.

I don’t think anyone was suggesting that they were going to sing or shout over the silence, just that they might not join in subsequently with wishing that Charles Windsor ‘reigns’ over us for a long time.

Yep I agree, that’s a good idea. If you don’t sing the anthem you put yourself out for ridicule etc. As I have said I think the best and polite thing to do is not to participate and that is what I will do.

Well, it's only one verse long, think ourselves lucky that we've not got one that drags on and on.

Well, it's only one verse long, think ourselves lucky that we've not got one that drags on and on.
God save our gracious King,
Long live our noble King,
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the King!

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

Not in this land alone,
But be God’s mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o’er.

From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the King!
O’er his thine arm extend,
For Britain’s sake defend,
Our father, prince, and friend,
God save the King!

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On him be pleased to pour,
Long may he reign!
May he defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the King!

You missed a bit:

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
and like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush!
God save the King!

The irony, I suppose, is that the entire point of the song is to oppose a bloke calling himself "King Charles III".

I'm 56, going on 57, and I can hand on heart say I have never in my entire life heard a rendition of more than one verse.

They play the longer version on certain official occasions, I think.
