It was an awful signing and a stupid amount of money for a player who was never first choice and rarely fit.

In hindsight. I don’t recall anyone saying that when he signed or right up until his season ending injury.

That’s it, he was an integral part of a good Sevilla defence and was seen as a good signing.

The long term injury in the infancy of his Villa career meant he never really lived up to the expectations despite some great performances against high level opponents.

At the time, I thought it was a decent squad cover type signing if not a spectacular one.

It’s probably because most people want to be positive about a new player. He’s not a terrible player, but he’s not good enough for where we are.

TBF, I had skipped to the last page or so and I did wonder about some of the comments as well.

Legion, please change the thread title. It gets our hopes up that the Donk is back at Anderlecht.

The very definition of a panic buy. He's absolutely shite. A Belgian Danny Drinkwater.

Luke got it right!

Maybe a similar player to Soucek. We also badly needed some height in the team for set pieces. Think this is a solid enough buy to partner with Kamara. He's not going to be much of a playmaker but an upgrade on Nakamba surely.

I thought this persons take is better.

TBH it could have gone either way and even people at the start of the thread worried McGinn would be in midfield as well. In this case Luke was right, It would be interesting what falling out happened between him and Emery, and what stupid wages we had him on being as no one has even sniffed at him.

Seems a lot longer than 3 years since Gerrard was in charge.

Aside from not even knowing who I was referring to, care to explain your “People like me” comment? What is that exactly John?

There’s no way on earth he should be compared to Danny Drinkwater.
Panic buy? Possibly, yes.
He didn’t particularly look good, but I think that was more to do with how he was played in our team, remember who was coach at the time!
He always looked half decent for Wolves and Belgium, and you didn’t play for that Belgium side if you were sh!te
