Feels good to get the first three points in the bag.

Thought we were OK without being anything special but that was enough. Everton were really only a threat from set pieces.

Kamara was excellent, controlled the centre, Mings was fabulous. McGinn was tenacious and determined.

More to improve on for sure but great to acknowledge that after a win.

I thought we were much the better team but made it hard for ourselves in the last ten minutes. Not a stroll in the park but when is it? A win is a win.

Not sure there was a stand out man of the match but I thought Kamara, Mings and Carlos were all solid. Also thought Watkins had a good game.

Can anyone honestly say we look like we'll improve on our final position last season? Too early to tell but I just don't see much evidence of a consistently effective way of playing.

Far too disjointed and careless with the ball. The moments of skill and winning-space that a player in a Villa shirt does provide are rarely anticipated by a team-mate.

If Everton are going to be lucky to avoid relegation, shouldn't we be wiping the floor with them instead of clinging-on?
I did see only second half. I agree with all of these observations. As someone else said on here; it didnt fill me with confidence. As a team we totally lost it for rest of the game after we went two up against a poor Everton. Its a strange one, we have some good players and you should think Gerrard and his team should have trained them to something by now. McGinn might not the best cpt for this ship either but that dont count for much of hte overall team-performance and good player he can be though. Can only hope it click together the right way sooner or later.

Aston Villa 2 Everton 1: How Gerrard beat Lampard

10 out of 10 for this video which also explains why we are not seeing the best from McGinn and Ramsey, and why we can't keep the ball.

No more bagel football, please SG let's play our midfielders in the middle of the park.

Positives: the 3 points, Kamara was a class above, Ings doing what Ings does, JJ much improved on last week, Mings showed why we missed him last week, Buendia showed why he should be starting.

Negatives: Gerrard’s selection, Coutinho a passenger. Watkins in front of goal, Diego’s injury.

Onwards, but had Buendia been on the pitch instead Coutinho, we would have won that game much more comfortably. How many chances is Coutinho going to get - either Gerrard has to find a way to get them both on the pitch or the talk about form/competition is nonsense when it comes to his star signing.

I thought we looked ok today - much better when Emi came on.

Kamara looks really good - always showing for the ball and reads the game so well.

Thought JJ was good, Carlos looked good hope he’s not injured for long.  mings looked good too - we’re def better with him in the team. One of Ings best games for us after a quiet start

They were awful upfront - for obvious reasons.

It’s something to build on - still lots of questions to answer.  Like how we can either take  or defend a corner, and also how we get our forward play to work slicker.

Emi Phil and Bailey are probably our best players but have to say Ings and Watkins worked.  Hopefully confidence will be built and onwards and upwards

They were sharper after Dele Alli came on but didn’t deserve that goal, made for a very nervy last 10.

How Steven can leave Emi out now is beyond me.

I'd completely forgotten Dele Alli existed.
So has he

Think both worselves and Everton will have different personnel by the end of the window. If we find that elusive 8 and (ideally) another option up top we should improve on last year.

build up / entrance  music is too loud.

Yup, this isn’t the US of A. Turn it in and let the atmosphere build.
100% - can’t talk before the game and the music is shit or im old - either way - not happy

Thats better. Though the last 10 minutes was the most Villa thing ever.

Scores on the doors

Martinez - 8 not a huge amount to do but stood up well in those last few minutes with some key saves and time wasting.
Cash - 6 got forward well but caught a couple of times late on
Carlos - 7 very solid doesn't waste possession up until his late injury
Mings - 8.5 MoTM - superb
Digne - 5 thought our poorest performer defensively today though did get in some good attacking positions
Kamara - 8 wow this guy gives us something we've missed for years, very impressed
Ramsey - 7 started well faded out of the game then sprang to life second half, good ball carrying
McGinn - 7 ran himself ragged but his delivery into the box with time and space left a lot to be desired but better passing than the last few times Ive seen him
Coutinho - 7 - he does slow us down a bit but other than one misplaced pass he was tidy efficient and skilful on the ball.
Watkins - 7 - 2 assists, ran himself into the ground and whilst he's struggling in front of goal the workrate was phenomenal, he ran Tarkowski and Coady ragged.
Ings - 7 - goal good link up play and much better

Subs

Buendia - 8 - game changer from the bench absolutely brilliant and great goal
Chambers/Konsa/Young - 6 did what they needed to get us over the line
Bailey - 6 nice little cameo shame we couldn't have used his pace a bit more.

Gerrard - 7 set up was constructive, good subs (though a bit confused at the end) which goes to show if you have strength on your bench use it for the last 30 minutes it can change games. Its not quite clicking yet but I think with more fine tuning this team will grow and be more competitive.

Fans - 8 pretty good support today.

Overall, a good first home performance and something to build on for next week.

Oh and after 15 years of Smart Motorway Roadworks on the M6 from West Mids up to the North West, they've finally finished!! Hallelujah....
Mostly agree - was disappointed with Digne - but though cash was good - in the only way he knows how.  Also think EMi2 should have been 9 we looked so much better with him on

Positives
• Sweet strike from Ings. Excellent technical strike. Some of his link up play was also very good.
• Kamara had some class moments and looks as though he could be the answer in that position. There was one left footed first time pass in the first half that was elite level.
• Great block from Mings near the end to stop an equaliser. A Tyrone special.
• McGinn interceptions.
• Ramsey back to his best in driving forward with the ball.
• Got the job done but my word was it unnecessarily pressured at the end.

Negatives
• Chance creation when dominating the ball still needs work. The majority of the chances we make are in transition and that needs to improve.
• McGinn in possession - still gives the ball away too much.
• Threat from the full backs. Opposition still happy for us to have the ball wide. We need to make this a more threatening area.
• Getting the best out of Coutinho is still a work in progress.
• We still seem massively at risk from set pieces. What does McPhee do?!

Was a bit disappointed with Leon's cameo but we didn't feed him enough either to use his pace on the break. Think he'll stay on the subs bench.
