I really like the monochrome versions, they're great but it looks awful as a thumbnail/icon such as on facebook (the 'profile' version is ok but the smaller version that you see inline at the top of posts is terrible) where the 1874 and star are pretty much completely lost and even 'Aston Villa' is barely legible. They haven't updated the icon for the browser tab yet but it will clearly be even worse there.

For anyone not on social media this is how it looks right now:

It’s a minor improvement on the Lerner effort we’ve been trying to get away from, but it’s still shit and there’s nothing we can do about it. Just have to accept that it is what it is…and in my case, I’ll simply continue to not buy any merchandise that has this new badge (hopefully they’ll be some decent Adidas stuff without the full badge).

Some are so easily insulted, and that's fine. Some are obsessed about something that really isn't that important, and that's fine too.

We can debate whether it ‘really isn’t that important’ or not, but you’d have to continue to participate in this thread, which you may find under stimulating. I happen to think that it is important. I’m interested in Aston Villa as a cultural phenomenon - it’s part of the reason that I follow the club. The mosaic crest on the old Trinity Road stand gable was integral to the club’s identity for more than 70-years. I can’t see the new one lasting for any length of time, except through bloody mindedness.

My response was aimed at the original poster, and the way comments were made in that post, rather than a general point.

However, In the grand scheme of things, there are a few points I think worth making.

There are differing views on the shape of it, the size of it, the font on it, the colour of it, the star on it, the lion on it, the direction of the lion, the style of lion, the inclusion of 1874, the exclusion of Prepared, the double line, the other versions (including digital), the inclusion of everything except the lion. Now, based on all those disagreements, the chances of it being something that unites everyone are about as slim as it's possible to get.

Some people take huge offence, and comment as if the world depended on it, and denounce it all as being 'shit' (for any one, or all, of the points above) which means it's going to be impossible to get something upon which we all agree. That there hasn't been the consultation people think it should have, is because it doesn't meet their idea of what's perfect. A consultation of sorts was done, as it was in Purslow's version, and I'm pretty sure that the FA wouldn't say anything else.

We haven't done a Leeds (or a Stoke); we have a recognisable crest/badge/shield that has our name on it, our colours on it, and a lion, and despite protestations to the contrary isn't horrendous in the grand scheme of things.

When people say something is "shit" though, that doesn't mean they're thinking about it 24/7, like a war veteran having flashbacks of a crashing chopper. Every now and then I'll see it, think it's a bit shit, and then crack on, that's what this thread is for.

I also much prefer the monochrome ones.

For me it's a minor downgrade on the Lerner Crest.

I think the first thing Risso said when we saw it in January is that it's so obvious the spacing is wrong with the lion too close to the top and the simple fix would just be to move the wording to the top.  I guess they didn't do that as they wanted more differential from the Lerner crest.  Ultimately it's an awkward looking design that hasn't really achieved anything.

But I also agree with Drummond, they were never going to please everyone.  I think the simple fix of moving the words and removing the drop shadow would have made it significantly better, but people would have still hated the colours etc.

We'll get used to it.

There’s a lot of things wrong with the design (as myself and others have already detailed many times in this thread), but the simple fact that it now reads “Aston Villa” rather than “AVFC” makes it a minor improvement in my opinion.

As the saying goes…”you can’t polish a turd”…but that’s exactly what they’ve tried to do.

I like it.
I like the video and how it tries to explain the thought process behind the design and the joined up thinking behind it.
Its certainly not a turd !

Personally I don’t mind the new crest itself however I can’t stand the yellow in blue…always feels very wishy washy to me

If they could just dump the insipid yellow, it would be OK.

I think the yellow makes sense. It's really difficult when you're working with just claret and blue on a badge that is predominantly going to be set on a backdrop of claret or blue. So the lion in a third colour makes sense.

The badge has been designed so all the elements stand out against the three prime colours it will sit on - claret, blue, and white. Having a claret lion would mean it blends into the background on the most common backdrop colour for the badge. It's also a pretty dark colour that doesn't stand out on its own, and that would leave the big proportion of the detail very dark indeed.
