To be honest I would never have noticed the drop shadow but now you’ve mentioned the drop shadow all I can see is the bloody drop shadow

I thought a drop shadow was the penumbra created by a gentleman's lowered clackers when sitting astride a porcelain pedestal.

Have I missed them actually announcing the new badge, rather than just starting to use it?

I think they know there's going to be a negative reaction, so are just low-key releasing it and hiding it with the good news Adidas story.

I've grown to quite like the new one.

The new round one is/was shit and looked a bit Chelsea; that in itself though was better than that stupid gaslamp thing.

A shield makes sense, it's a strong lion, it says Aston Villa, it's a shame (for me) that it has a star, but most people wanted one. It doesn't stick out and is a gentle update on what we've had for a while, so is easier to implement.

I think I enjoy how upset this makes people. It's a bit like watching my mom get wound up by somebody parking opposite their drive and forcing my dad to agree.

That's really made me laugh.

I like the new badge. 300m fans seems quite a lot. If we all donated 40p today, we'd wipe that annual loss out.
Good idea. We could set up a crowd sourcing subscription service called 'Moany Fans'.

It's a dated design technique that creates the impression that a design element - in this case the lion - is floating above the rest of the graphic, casting a shadow underneath.

They are a pain, as they don't work well on screen, or small iterations of the design as you can't see them, or on physical things like badges and embroidered stuff like shirts...

Ta, cant say I would have noticed it to be honest.

I'd like to simplify things by having the shield badge on the home kit, the circle on the away kit and just a Lion on the third kit that faces left for cup games and right for league.

The Google logo had a drop shadow. But they got rid of it in 2013.

I had to Google this obviously.

It's all just a bit Powerpoint isn't it?

It's partly design fashion - like no bevels on logos, no drop shadows, but solid colours and simplified logos are everywhere (the premier league is a great example, as well as VW, the BBC etc), but also the practicality of viewing everything on screen - particularly small screens. Having fussy logos with small elements (stars, dates) don't work very well as you can't see them on your phone.

Without the shield sigh. It just has always seemed so obvious to have a stand alone lion.
Then do whatever else you want off the shirt (without daft font spacing like we appear to be getting).

I’ll savour my last moment of hope they might be smart enough to do it.

I don't really know about these things, but I'm guessing the only issue with a standalone lion would be that other teams (and countries) have a lion on their shirts, so it might not be identifiable as Aston Villa for marketing purposes.

The clubs that I can think.of who use standalone badges, all have pretty unique symbols.

Shield - heritage
Aston Villa - claret
Lion - claret

The above would have worked for me - with an option for the gold lion/highlights, Prepared etc to be used in very certain circumstances.

It's the yellow Lion that I dislike most, same with the Lerner badge. I also want to see 'Prepared' come back, the star to go, and that awful shading to go.
