I thought Ramsey was doing okay.

No bad thing getting them in front of emery though.  At a minimum they’ll get the chance to see what the expectations will be next season.

He's injured Dante. Not sure how serious it is but I heard he was out for a while.

I've often wondered whether fans of lower-league clubs ever get annoyed/tired of their club borrowing starlets from Premier League clubs?

The success rate of 17-21 year olds going out and finding what football is like at the lower levels must be pretty mixed at best. For every Cam Archer or Tim Irnbru, we've probably got  a handful of players out on loan who don't make a dent.

Wouldn't some of these clubs rather blood their own players, not potential prima donnas who will bugger back to fancy training grounds in a few months?

I presume it only happens because the parent club pay all the young player's wages so the risk is less for the smaller club.

A lot of lower league clubs have little choice. Without loans to supplement their squads they would struggle to field a team every week and of course this is down to finance. Many don’t really have an academy and if they do the quality is unlikely to match the level from the PL clubs.
I don’t think the model is good for football as it allows the big clubs to hoard all the talent and starve other clubs of youth development.

It must depend on whether the player makes a valuable contribution or not. When we were in the Championship, we came to love Tammy Abraham but loan signings that didn't work would be pretty forgettable.

To function as a league team you need somwhere between 20 and 25 players available for your fisrt team. If you can have 4-5 of them be 'free' then for some teams that can be the difference between red and black. Sometimes it'll be players who become integral to your team and earn you a few extra places in the league, maybe even a playoff place or promotion, and that's great for everyone, but if not they might just be extra bodies in training who only make a handful of appearances. If you stopped these sorts of loans, or massively restricted them, I suspect a lot of L1 and L2 clubs would really struggle. It would also make the argument for reserve teams in the pyramid harder to ignore.

From what I’ve read most decent young players get snapped up anyway, so the chances of a lower level club having an unearthed diamond in their youth ranks is pretty low.  Which is pretty shitty, but we are very much part of that food chain, ask WBA.

Until recently Brentford completely scrapped their youth set-up as any good player was quickly signed by one of the bigger London clubs.  They found recruiting Chelsea/Spurs/Arsenal’s released 18-years old to be a better system.

A goal for Feeney who apparently played really well, I think he might end up being a bit special and I'd probably be looking to get him a loan for the rest of the season, could easily be the ball playing centre-half we've been looking for.

I have been impressed with Feeney every time I have have seen him. At any level from U18 to playing at Walsall for the seniors he has looked skillful, assured and composed. I have high hopes for him.

(As an aside predictive text doesn't recognize Walsall!)

He's also a big lad and doesn't like losing too apparently.

Yes I've said before that he looks something special. Was disappointed that he wasn't on the bench against Stevenage.

We need to get him out on loan so that we can get him ready for the first team. He's 18 in May so we should be making him part of the first team squad before he turns 19 if he's that good.

I could be wrong, but it doesn't feel like centre-back is a position where you get many very young players breaking through? Generally even the very good ones have hit 20 before they become first team ready, compared to more attacking players who can often appear at 16/17.

Maybe it's the physical requirements of the role, or the fact that a mistake as a centre-back is often more costly than a mistake as a forward, but I'd be surprised to see an 18-year-old centre-back playing any meaningful part in the first team - injury crisis apart.  He looks a great prospect, but hopefully he'll get a loan next season and plenty of first team games at a decent level at 18/19, then perhaps be part of the squad when he's 19/20?

Or maybe I know fuck all and he's the next Gareth Barry who could look effortlessly comfortable in a premier league defence at 17?
