Might have pissed people off but there is a point in what CCR is saying. I was dubious about starting 11 today, but there are people on the pre match thread today and other threads in recent days and weeks, calling for Gerrards head ffs, completely OTT.
I was in York for the weekend and travelling back when the goals went in, so haven’t seen the game. If people on here have said we didn’t play that well, fair enough, but Im not sure it matters at the minute. You can have all the tactics in the world, but sometimes football at every level comes down to confidence, at least up to a point. Lots of our players are low on confidence, most of all our strikers. So in summary I’m chuffed to bits and its just what the team and Ollie Watkins needed. Tough game against Southampton next week but aren’t they all, Watford drawing at Man Utd for example.

Yep, and as Potter said before the game, it's only really the top 2 or 3 who aren't inconsistent at the moment. West Ham are 6th and they've only won 1 in 6.

Somewhere on the Brighton forum there's a sullen Seagull saying
"Play in claret and blue and badly need a win? Just rock up to the Amex and we'll roll over and gift you 3 points. Potter OUT"

Not a great performance, and ironically we've done to Brighton what has been done to us in the last couple of games, with them having plenty of the ball in the final third, but creating little, and then we took a couple of our few chances.  I said in the build-up we seem to do better against teams that want to actually have a go, and it's played out that way again.  I think we've played better and NOT won this season, but given the last two results, the three points was definitely the most important thing.  Hopefully builds a bit of confidence ahead of of Southampton.

Special mention for Watkins, who still had his first-touch issues, but it was a very well-taken goal and he worked his socks off all game, especially chasing Lamptey down our left side.  I lost count of the number of times Lamptey was forced to halt a run forward and cut back on himself due to Watkins' relentless pressing - and he's one of the most promising attacking full-backs in the league.  I do wonder if Ollie was selected ahead of Buendia for precisely that reason.  If he was, then it was a job very well done.

Watkins looks great when he's put through running onto the ball, as with the goal today. It's when he's got time to think about what to do and a defender in front of him that he looks poor.

And Spurs in 7th have fewer points in the last 6 games than we have.  I'd love to see a bit of consistency in the last dozen or so games.  Even in terms of performance if not in results. Clearly the top 3 are head and shoulders clear of everyone quality-wise, but I'd love us to show we can compete with the chasing pack till the end of the season (even if they're well out of reach this season).

Big, big result today. The last couple of results have been very disappointing so to get a result at Brighton is very welcome.

Luiz and Ings not great though. Still need to look at a few things before the Southampton game.

Much-needed three points. Hopefully it puts an end to our mini slump.

Wasn't able to tune in till 4.30. So why was it delayed, exactly? Info thin on the ground

They were late searching VP for Ollie's first touch...ended up leaving without it :)

Thought we played some nice stuff at times, but still very inconsistent. Like others, SJM was my MOTM and Luiz needs to take a long, hard look at himself in mirror.

edit to add : I thought Tim I. looked very assured in his cameo - excited to see more of him.

Many lorries are now making their way to the midlands laden with  humble pie. Mainly for people of this parish. The meltdown following the team announcement was ridiculous.  Me.. well I'm VTID

Best Fan sticker for you.

But to be fair, he’s about right

Absolutely. Someone on the match thread had “Gerrard out” before the game kicked off. Jeeez.

Toronto has said everything I wanted to. I’ll just add that Cash should be fined for removing his shirt. Yes, I know it’s a heartfelt and sincere message but don’t remove your shirt

I’d rather be sent off for making a gesture than hiding behind “rules and regulations”.

Support of Ukraine is s more important than a yellow, red card or defeat in a game.

Of course it is. He could have made the same gesture but left the shirt partly on. That doesn’t get a booking. In other words, you don’t need to get booked to make your point.

Better but not great. I feel more optimistic that we are a work in progress rather than falling apart now though.
I’ve not watched the match yet Nev, but that’s what I thought after seeing the result.

Very relieved that we finally get 3 points. Pleased for Watkins to score again. Don't want to see Luiz play again and don't want to see both Watkins and ings on at the same time. Still want Gerrard out and purslow with him.

The first ten minutes or so we looked all over the place, like we'd we'd just jumped off the coach (which we probably had). We got the goal whilst we had that spell on top and after that, we did ok. It was much needed more than brilliant but i'll take that.

Look at that Mings pass. He looked for Watkins and was world class disturbiton. Commentator called it a big punt! SG clearly got them working on their shooting and passing I think in coming weeks we could be having lot more pleasure and entertaining fair.
Southampton Leeds and West Ham will all give up opportunities for goals and we have to take advantage. These passes by Mings sometimes are the best way out of things
Brilliant!
