Good stuff Dave.
It's a good point that whatever happens with Coutinho we are being talked about seriously as a place he could end up.
It also shows as you say, that our owners are committed about where they want to take us.

Come on guys; forget about being linked seriously or otherwise with a player -Coutinho could be added to a whole host of names that we’ve all talked about before- it’s all about getting the player through the door. That’s the barometer. If the club manage it then they break a very very long loop.

I've just seen a French Twitter account post this:
'Coutinho. Biggest ever Flop at Barça?
Time at club: 4 years
Price: €145m.
Games: 106.
Goals: 25
Assists: 14'

The Gullit and Chelsea comparison is intriguing, I’d not considered that before. I’m getting a little excited about this potential signing so fingers crossed that he rocks up at Villa Park soon.

Arsenal and Bergkamp, too. Would Wenger have come and revolutionised them without Rioch's marquee acquisition? Citeh and Silva as their take-us-seriously signing. Every emergent club needs that spark to light the fire. It'd be nice if this is could silence my inner doubting Villa fan.

Good read as usual Dave, I think the Chelsea analogy is a good one too.

Someone posted on the Jan war chest thread that he could be our Robinho signing, a genuine class signing who was deemed to be worth over £140m not too long ago, so similar to the Gullit at Chelsea signing that you mention here.

If this gets over the line then I think we need to be very excited, and not too cynical, as this will be the statement signing we have waited for since NSWE took over, the next question is then “who’s next” in the summer.

The Chelsea/Gullit analogy is perfect. If he comes, it'll be a game changer. Literally any other player we approach will have it on their mind that Coutinho felt Villa were a better option than Barça.

I mean, to us it's obvious given we walloped them 3-0 last time we played them, but I'd guess that point is lost on the general population.

What have you done now?

I was rather rude to an obvious spammer in April 2021 and yesterday. My comments did not adhere to their community guidelines.

Well the price isn't his fault. Barcelona migh have [had] higher standards, but 39 goals/assists in 106 games will do me .

At Bayern it was 11 goals and 9 assists in 20 starts and 14 sub appearances, which will do for me even more.

And, if anyone has watched the compilation of his LFC highlights,  "its not just goals...it's Coutinho goals."

Understand the Gullit analogy but the other two way off the mark. Silva and Bergkamp reached their peak at City and Arsenal.
