Steeeeeeevve Hoddddddddddddge

A man even more tone deaf than Joe, he’s built an entire life on the day he made a beeline to get Maradona’s shirt after England had been cheated out of a World Cup thus demonstrating where his head was really at whilst his team and supporters suffered. A shot across the bows to Villa fans that this self absorbed mercenary would help rely on bad back passes to get what he wanted most in life. Thought he was too big for us and told us so. The fact that he forced a move away at a time in the game where clubs decided where footballers went or didn’t go speaks volumes.
That back pass was something else. Only he will ever really know whether he meant it or not (History lesson for the younger readers: Hodge came back from Mexico'86, Villa were a poor side in fairness, then the night before a home game against Norwich City he announced he wanted to leave. The crowd essentially ripped him a new one at the game and his back pass gifted Norwich their opener in their 4-1 win).

As for that Maradona shirt. Technically, Hodge provided the assist.

Maybe he should be called Backpasses from now on?

Was trying to get at it being his back passing being his route to getting what he wanted most from life; Maradona's shirt and leaving Villa because without either, it's far less likely he'd have got what we wanted! He even titled his own book 'The man with Maradona's shirt.'

Should have made it clearer.

Imagine the social media meltdowns he'd have caused now.

I'm too young to remember Hodge, but that is poetry.

Content Warning: the below uses the word ‘nutter.’ And is about Alpay.

Alpay Ozalan: One of John Gregory’s first forays into the international transfer market was to fetch back a complete nutter in Alpay. Started off his time at Villa all smiles, badge kissing, good performances and piggybacks. Ended it getting his ‘dream move’ to play in South Korea after thinking he was going to replace Fabio Cannavaro at Inter Milan following a decent World Cup with Turkey. In between there were clashes with Villa over money, clashes with G.Taylor, clashes with his own team mates and then the worst sin; clashing with a newly anointed national treasure who’s now justifying the World Cup in Qatar. Seemingly so close to spontaneously combusting that he made one D.Ellis break the habit of a lifetime and write off an investment which should give an indication as to the ferocity Alpay could conjure. Now bringing his unique brand of enforcement off the pitch in Turkey’s Department for Justice as a politician, where he’s been known to throw the odd punch or two around in assembly. Still awaiting a fingers to lips celebration to follow.

Greed. Lies. Ego. And thats just the players. All links with their fans severed by the amount of money swilling around in the premier league to the point that footballers talk about themselves as if fans should be interested in their 'journey' and their ambition to play 'at the highest levels' which means somehow we should all be grateful that they descend to earth and deign to spend a little time with Aston Villa as a stepping stone to greater things. Footballs' soul is about fans and clubs, not players, agents, managers and trumped-up competitions designed to enrich the national and international football bureaucrats who have done nothing but ruin OUR game. When murderers can pass a fit and proper test, when 'fair play' means shutting the door to a private club to anyone else who dares to have a go, when a 'European Super League' is a sickening parody, a closed shop of the rich for the rich to be consumed around the world by people who have no idea what truly supporting a football club is about then we are well and truly fucked. Fucked as a World Cup to be played in a country who punishes peoples basic freedoms and bought the competition with bribes and assisted by a greasy worm of a man in charge of world football to be played in the middle of winter in stadiums built on the bones of indentured labourers then it is a monument to total world class fuckery. And the fuckedupness now has new variants of disaster in 48 country world cups ....what is the point.... sickening greed. Agents feeding off the carcass of the peoples game, players so convinced of their privelege that they would abandon their hometown club, their captaincy , their legacy as a legend of their own club to become a bitpart player for a trashy new money monopoly with no heritage, no class and no values. Players wives, girlfriends attracted solely by wealth who believe they have some expertise in public health and use the tools of social media to spout their idiotic bile and poison from the beach in Dubai, influencing the gullible, giving excuses to the weak-willed, raising doubts and ending up spreading around a fatal disease amongst the poor, the elderly and the gullible. Good on yer Australia for calling out these dangerous clowns, now over to the Premier League to ban players who refuse to do the right thing, playing in front of crowds who must all be vaccinated to protect each other, their families and health service. Do the right thing for once you self-important overpaid conceited twats and get in line with the rest of us trying to get through it all. I wont hold my breath.

Oh yes and stadiums. Its a fucking football ground. 4 stands. End of.
