Correct. Unfairly maligned, IMO.

Way I see it too. Has improved out of all recognition from the Matty Rash days. Very solid defender. Takes a lot of unnecessary grief for following tactical instruction.

Happy with this, I really like the look of Rowe so keeping Cash around whilst we see how things go seems like a good call to me. Garcia as a option to compete with them both is a nice cheap alternative as well.

To get a definite upgrade I reckon we'd be looking at £40m+ in the current market and I just don't see the point in that sort of spending in that position right now.

There's also no guarantee you get the upgrade you desire and instead import some new problems.

Absolutely, I'm sure most people would've thought Frimpong a good option but how he's settling at Liverpool shows how hard it can be to get it right with full backs. Even with us Maatsen has proven how difficult it is to get someone in who is ready for this league 'out of the box'.

14m rasing to 16m. Been an outstanding bit of business tbh. Easy target.

Agree with all of the above stuff.

Given how much money we've spent on upgrading / adding to nearly every other part of the pitch it's pretty telling as to Emery’s thoughts how little of that has been at right-back.

He's not improved at the same rate we've improved (like say, Watkins or McGinn) but he's levelled up nicely from the guy we bought from Forest.

He does a great advert in his pants for all the ladies and those gents of a like persuasion out there.
This is still the greatest Matty Cash advert https://x.com/HLTCO/status/1595820312842862592

No, he is often a liability, makes too many goal conceding mistakes.
Yes he has the odd good game and occasionally does something good with the ball. By his standards he is having a decent season.

His good games FAR outweigh his bad games. He plays exactly how Unai wants him to. Keep possession. That’s often why he checks back rather than just bombing up the wing like most fans would prefer him to do, increasing the risk of him losing it. He makes mistakes. Everyone does.

He certainly gets blamed for many goals, unfairly so. Plenty on here blamed him for Konsa's red card v Newcastle for example! It's called a scapegoat. Goal conceding mistakes are rarely the fault of Cash or Digne to be fair to them. The preserve of our higher rated keeper and three regular centre backs usually.

Ned, Garcia, Konsa, Disasi - all given chances at RB to replace him but he has seen them all off. Sign of a very solid character - same for likes of McGinn and Watkins. Plenty doubt them and they kick on again.

New: #AVFC reach an agreement in principle with Matty Cash over a new contract until 2029+option of a further year. Announcement aims to be this week once paperwork is finalised. John McGinn also close to joining 28yo in signing a new deal.
@TheAthleticFC

we’ve done a few of these deals, presumably on reduced wages but for a longer duration. Digne, Mings are signed and McGinn not far away.

It’s a smart move.  Less money each week, but more importantly these guys set the standard, they’re the DNA of the club.  Furthermore they’re an insurance policy that gives us the freedom to target ambitious wunderkids from around the globe.

Watkins should be next.
