It was an absolute pleasure to be at a full raucous Villa Park after so long. Could have done with better weather but never mind can't have everything.  Arrived a bit early to ensure being able to deal with any covid protocols. There were long lines of  queues at every turn style but moving quickly. Got in at about 2.30. It was good to see all my "neighbours" had turned up safe and sound. This I wasn't sure of and a bit nervous that someone might be "missing" so that made the day and of course the result. The phone signal is just as crap as ever and food offering for little ones  not much better in North upper but hey we were all there and that's what matters.

“We trained all week in dry conditions and today at Villa Park the rain was very wet which we didnt prepare for"

Steve Bruce

Yes this game of football hangs on small drops like that.

Is Souness on their coaching staff now?

Wet rain. The worst kind. Probably the water content.

Martinez 6 complete rush of blood for the non penalty but did not have much to do.
Cash 7 fully committed performance
Mings 6
Konsa 6
Young 8 used his experience
Luiz 6 sloppy at times
Buendia 8 full of energy and guile
SJM 8 played higher up the pitch and it showed
AEG 4 Great penalty but really poor.
Ramsey 7 a very accomplished performance after some early lapses.
Ings 7 just for the finish

Funny how we all see things differently, I'd go:

Martinez - 6 - not much to do, but rush of blood could have been costly
Cash - 7.5 - much, much better than last week
Mings - 6, overall pretty solid byt typical Mings moment first half that nearly led to a goal
Konsa - 7 - solid
Young - 6.5. did OK, can't escape the feeling he's just an upgraded Elmo though
Luiz - 5 - probably knackered, but well off the pace and sloppy with his passing
McGinn - 7.5 full of energy and good passing
Ramsey - 7.5, lots of nice tackles and some perceptive passing.
Buendia - 6 - some nice touches, but painfully slow and easily bullied off the ball numerous times
El Ghazi - 6 good penalty, not a whole lot else though
Ings - 7.5 for the goal, without that it would have been a 6. We miss Ollie's running with Ings in the team.

Both the goal and penalty came from dead ball situations. Perhaps a sign the new coach is making a difference

Good to be back today. I'd forgotten how noisy it can be.

I thought the performance was ok and the result was obviously good. We looked disjointed for a good part of the first half but improved without creating a lot of chances.

Like others, I was impressed with Ramsey. There was much more energy and drive to his game than I had seen previously.

I didn't think Buendia was as good as some are making out. McGinn and Ramsey were better, but I am hopeful Emi will improve.

The only big gap is Buendia and Young Risso.

If you are one of those people who likes their statistics Buendia's 'numbers' made him the best player in the Championship last season.

I can't understand how 2 people have given Mings a 6, that's ridiculous, got an assist, won a penalty (which was 100% a goal without the handball) and limited them to 1 shot on target all game and had Wilson riled up and looking like a knob all game. If anything he was ramseys biggest competition for motm.

After the Ings goal went in, Emi the First ran to the halfway line and gave MacPhee a kiss.

Routine home win despite not playing well for me. Very pleasing. Absolutely great to be back at the ground again. Funny how you slip back into routine, felt like I'd never been away.

I'd probably have given him a 7 if it wasn't for that ricket first half, which against most other teams would have led to us being a goal down.

That was a foul for me, Wilson just ran into him and gave him a 2 handed shove when he was easily cutting it out otherwise. That was a big part of the piss poor start from the referee.

SJM was motm for me.

Mings scores bonus points for winding their mob up when jogging off the pitch after receiving treatment, with his beautiful big grin.

Biggest disappointment for me, was Matty Cash's bald patch. Where's that suddenly appeared from?! Sad times.
