he doesn't make our team most weeks so he'll never get in the national team
Never?

He's not good enough for an automatic starting shirt for the Villa let alone the world champions

He’s 23/24. I know Emi is a goalkeeper, but writing players off too early can be a mistake.

Maybe 23/24 will be his season then

He was away with their squad when we signed him wasn't he?  Seem to remember a picture of him and big Emi.

Apart from that time that he did? Y'know, earlier this year?

If the Argentinian Gary MacAllister can get in their team so can our Emi.

Probably sitting there a bit gutted about the Gerrard era and what he might have otherwise been up to this evening.

At the start of Gerrard’s term we had a fair few internationals on duty. At the end we hardly had any.

At the start we had Michael Beale heading up the day to day operation with Gerrard doing the press conferences.

At the end, we still had Gerrard doing the press conferences. But it was a Division 2 manager with Div 2 tactics in Critchley running the show. And ruining World Cup chances, obv.

He is 26 next week so in the prime years of his career.

Can't really blame Gerrard for injuries to Kamara, Carlos and Digne though. Buendia isn't good enough consistently for us yet, and Mings put one on a plate for Mason Mount right in front of Southgate.

If mistakes mattered to Gerrard then Maguire would have spent his summer scrapping in Mykonos again rather than in Qatar.

You should know by now that Southgate doesn't like to lose face, and in his mind dropping Maguire would be a massive blow to his own perceived dignity. I just don't think you can really blame Gerrard for any players who didn't make the World Cup. When you've got players like Ben White, in great form and top of the table with Arsenal not getting a look in, then it's hard to make a case for Mings. Apart from the players who were injured who I mentioned before, who else should have gone? Luiz hasn't really been a regular, and Brazil have the likes of Guimaraes and Fabinho in that position. Watkins?

and Fred, if Luiz isn't a better option than Fred then I haven't got a hole in my arse. I think he's the only 1 who was genuinely hard done by and I'd put that down to Gerrard. A few others are probably 'maybes' to have gone if they were in top form and someone else was struggling but most were only on the fringes of the squads before Gerrard arrived and even if we'd been much better might not have forced their way in. Looking forward for the next world cup we really should have a lot more players representing us if we get where we want to be.

Fred's been a regular in the Brazilian team for a couple of years though, Luiz hasn't, and that predates Gerrard. Luiz wasn't getting picked in the squad for their qualification games at the start of last season under Smith, apart from one game where he replaced the injured Casemiro, who is the other option they have. I guess when they have Casemiro and Pacqueta as their first choice two in front of the defence, and then Guimaraes, Fred and Fabinho in the squad, it was always going to be difficult for Luiz to get in, barring injury.

I heard a rumour that White stormed out of the England camp after a bust up with the coaches, so Mings might’ve been a more reliable/squad friendly option in hindsight.

I feel Digne/Buendia/Luiz/watkin’s played below their potential whilst with Gerrard’s villa so in a parallel world they might have made their respective squads.  Very few players actually improved under Gerrard which was probably his biggest issue.

Minimal impact today again I thought. Still not sure what he’s all about.
