Better kit than last season.

Indeed.

Last season's seemed to borrow inspiration from that great 2014-15 team. With added naffness around the neck of the jersey.

This at least looks simple and uncluttered. And by the looks of it a darker claret, rather than some of the pinks and purples we have flirted with in the past.

Interesting that you can get a, grassroots, Nike football shirt embroidered with a club badge for about £18 and the retailer is  still making a healthy profit at that.

These prices do seem a touch ambitious.

It's been a couple of years since I last looked, but you used to be able to buy a full team kit from Adidas (shirt, shorts and socks) for about £20 a person.  And they're making a decent profit there, too.

Replica shirts are all so expensive because obviously the manufacturer has paid upfront to the club to be able to sell them.  I would be interested to know if the commercial deal included a discussion over shirt pricing, i.e. "We'll pay you £xm a year, but that means we must be allowed to charge £xx per shirt."  Or maybe the club gets a decent cut of the shirt sales regardless of where they're sold, and less money up front?

Adidas' deal with Man Utd was for a mind-boggling £750m over 10 years, so clearly they are expecting to recoup that somehow.  To put that into context, the same as the prize money for reaching the champions league final every single year.

What grinds my gears about replica kit/shirt prices is that Sports Direct loss-led kits about 20 years ago so you could get an England, Villa, Ireland shirt for about £24 at release. This then killed off the independent sports retailers and rival chains. Now you are paying silly money in their stores too and there is no choice in the market anymore. Not sure if Castore will be exclusive to VP and avfc online but I wouldn't count on it being cheaper in Ashley's stores though! Cost of living crisis could seriously restrict sales this time around I reckon or simply prompt more counterfeit imports from online sources.

I much preferred the Kappa logo, I just think the Castore on is a bit insipid.

One small point wrt how the shirt will look on. I think the blue on the sleeve goes a little too far into the claret body which will have the effect of 'narrowing' the chest and may not flatter those with a bit of a belly.

Football shirts have always been a rip-off, but at least they're optional. I always had to wait till Christmas for mine as a kid as they were so expensive even 30 years ago. Everything is really bloody expensive these days.

I really like the Castore Logo.  I was wondering why I liked it so much and then remembered it was because it reminded me of the film Castaway with Tom hanks. I still to this day wonder if he hooked up with the sculptor down the road.

Don't worry "All kits are priced in line with Premier League benchmarking, with adult Replica home shirts £65." That's ok then...

While I'm not currently in the market for a shirt, I have a lad that is just starting to show an interest in football. £65 (£100+ if you add shorts, socks, printing) it does seem somewhat excessive.
