Title: Next season's kits
Post by: Smirker on April 27, 2021, 01:07:03 PM
Any news at all? Teams are starting to unveil theirs now, we still with Kappa for next season?

I also made these, I didn't want to bump an old thread so thought I'd leave them here, for the 150th year coming soon.

You've gone bold and early, Smirker, fair play. You've also stolen the thunder of some chap called...Marshall(?) who usually pops-up in the summer with his creations.

I haven't bought a Villa shirt other than retro ones for over twenty years but if we ever had an Adidas strip I'd be one of the first in the queue for it.

These are all great Smirker, but Addidas will want their three stipes down the arm.  I also can't see us changing the badge, unfortunately.

I think we should only bring back the 1982-style away kit if we actually qualify for the Champions League at some point. It would be a nice touch.

I donít like the hooped shirt even if we did wear it back in the day. Claret shirt, blue sleeves please. The away one they  can do what they like with though itís preferably white or yellow.

Whilst I broadly agree with this principal, I think it would be good to have a change occaisionally, particulalry when it's to an historically influenced kit like this - Smirkers idea is the original 1874 kit for our 150th year, which I think would be fantastic.  I'd also like to see us wear the striped 57 FA cup shirt for a season.

I'd take Umbro again over adidas. I don't think they made one bad kit for us in an admittedly short time. Some of their efforts over recent years have been great too, particularly some of the Brazilian clubs in my opinion.

1 year of Kappa left....

I personally don't want Adidas - we've never had them and I think of West Ham.

Umbro still produce good kits - Burnley's colours are spot on this season. I'm also partial to Hummel who have done a great job with our sister Cazoo club this season. Failing that New Balance.

Have a look at everyone's first ever kit. They're all weird and should bear no relation to the "proper" kits which get established over time.

I don't actually mind if we break the rule as a one-off for the 150th anniversary, but... that isn't yet.

Could maybe get away with some stripey effort of that nature as an experimental third (or fourth) kit.

But it's too loud for the home kit.

Iíve got to agree  the home shirt should always be claret body with blue arms, white shorts, blue socks. I like the current collection and would be happy to stick with Kappa. I didnít like Hummel or Umbro to be honest but would look at what Adidas had to offer.

I love my old Nike hoodie. Just plain grey with the smallest rampaging Villa lion embroidered onto the sleeve in a slightly darker shade of grey and a small white tick embroidered on the breast. Itís a bit worn now and we have never produced anything like it since. Iím not a fan of huge emblems or logos.

It's sort of unusual that we never had Adidas. I liked umbro, Reebok and Nike the best and didn't care much for the others, especially macron and Hummel. Diadora had one nice kit and one dreadful kit. Kappa are about mid-table, this year's is nice (but it's no 92/93 or 95/97).

This is nice. Source is email from the Club.

Cazoo Golden Goals
Cazoo, Aston Villaís shirt sponsor and principal partner, has been donating £1,000 to The Aston Villa Foundation, the Clubís official charity, for every goal scored by the first team in the Premier League this season.

To celebrate the first ever Cazoo Football Derby, Cazoo doubled the usual 'Golden Goals' donation from £1,000 to £2,000 resulting in an additional £4,000 raised on Saturday, thanks to a goal from Ollie Watkins and another from Anwar El Ghazi.

As a result of Aston Villa's on-pitch successes so far, we are delighted to announce that The Aston Villa Foundation will benefit from a £50,000 ĎGolden Goalsí donation from Cazoo, which will help to continue to deliver its mission of ĎWorking Together to Enrich Livesí.

100%

Eventually I think that's what it will be for most clubs. Full crest for the media and embroidered mascot on the kit.

Looks so much better. Compare Liverpool's shirts with the full crest to now. Spurs as well.

The lion on the classic 80s badge was better as it looked like the proper Scottish Lion Rampant, which is what it is supposed to be.

The current Villa lion looks like he's more likely to maul a cake than a gazelle. It's rubbish.

Looks so much better. Compare Liverpool's shirts with the full crest to now. Spurs as well.

Are we ever going to hear anything about this from the club? Have the current owners spoke about it?

Something like this, but without the AV
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TI824nbDwus/UKPzH9AirII/AAAAAAABfOA/LSjnGh-iEPo/s1600/aston_villa_fc_logo+history2.jpg)

I actually owned an original Harry Hampton shirt crest like that  he was given but gave it away to a mate...

I have not and will not buy a Shirt with the current badge on , it is horrendous.

Adidas shirt with the 80s crest would be a huge hit with the fans and would be a bit of a statement .Would sell thousands of them and the Village would not be able to cope with the Demand

Can we take this as a resignation from buying the shirts?

Anyway, fuck Adidas, if it's just an exercise in what I like personally, can't we get Paul Smith to do our kits?

Kit should be announced this month apparently. Kappa have been using more of a retro style for their other teams from what I've seen so I've made this.

Black socks because they are retro Villa.

How can you do the Denis Law thing of playing while holding the cuffs, which automatically instilled you with 110% cool factor if you wore a short sleeve strip?.

Until they saw me play.

I was responsible for creating my works B team, and made myself manager so I could pick me every time. We lost every game we played but I got to wear claret and blue (and held onto the shirt cuffs like Denis Law). There are no sufficiently excremental words to describe my football talents, but I looked so, so cool.

Retro kits in general tbh. I don't buy new ones, I did buy this seasons and the Luke one but those were exceptions.

Retros are just much better, in every way. And they aren't rip offs.

I noticed that the 1997/98 "Collymore" away shirt has been added to the retro range. I coveted that shirt at the time but had to make do with the home jersey that year.

It's a pity Villa can't use the manufacturer's logo on most of the retro shirts (Reebok in this case, Hummel for the 87/88 ones). Not that I'm overly keen on being a walking advertisement, but it just looks like something is missing and also a bit incongruous when the main sponsor is there across the chest.

NO NO NO!!!

Sorry, Smirker, didnít like them first time around either

Same here, can't understand the love for Hummel amongst football fans. Much prefer Kappa, Adidas, Umbro. Their "iconic" Denmark '86 shirt was shite as well.
in hummelís defence, the quality is excellent. Iíve the got the first one they did early 2000s. I wear it quite often, beach, swimming exercise etc. itís still in top nick now 20 or so years on. Faded a bit but a lot better than some of the shite weíve had occasionally

For sponsors peeling off, the Nike kits take some beating. Loved the away in 09-10, though.

1997-98 was a case of the away being better than the home. The previous home was very classic and, for me, the 1997-98 home was a tad too dark.

Yeah, I've been tempted by them, but the lack of manufacturers logo puts me off. They just don't look quite right. Tho tbh through the years I've worn less and less official club merchandise, now its just down to a thin claret & blue scarf with "Aston Villa, Coca Cola Cup Final 1994" on. Pride and joy, that is.

I was thinking that most clubs may be waiting for England to crash out of the Euros before they put the new strips on sale. If they go out now, theyíre competing (mostly) with England merch and it might not be the best time for them to go on sale. Fresh and exciting once Englandís euro campaign is done and dusted. Just a theory.

Just got last season's away shirt in the sales for £25. My first modern Villa kit in over a decade (for playing sport, not leisurewear - promise). I usually stick to the retro ones.

It's the Elite Athlete version, two sizes too big, but really only 0.5 times too big for normal mortals. Which means there's a bit of space for the belly to breathe (and, no doubt, grow).

i'm not much of a fan of Kappa kits, it always seems to me the mock ups look better that what we end up with.  With that said, I suspect it will look fine on the pitch.

Whilst I'm mainly traditionalist in my views, there's only so much you can do with claret body and blue sleeves and I have liked the odd change over the years.  I loved the Luke kit.  I also really like Smirkers 57 FA Cup homage at the start of this thread and would like to see something like that brought in for a season.

Edit - must have dreamt about a 57 homage as can't find it at the start of the thread.  Anyway, I'd like one.

Me too.  As long as we're recognisably claret body, blue sleeves 90% of the time then I don't mind being a bit creative periodically.

Favourite novelty kits for me are the thick striped one and the Luke one.  Favourite non-novelty ones are the 89/90 Hummel one, the 92/93 Umbro one with the 1890s style, and the 2002/03 Diadora one (dark claret, sky blue sleeves).

Agreed. The Luke kit was helped by it being a nice rich shade of claret.

The new home if legit (and it appears to be) is dreadful, a complete mess with too much going on. Also it likely won't be very flattering on, the shoulder design will make the wearer look wider at the belly and narrower at the shoulders. Not a good look. Ah well, I wasn't going to buy it anyway and will now wait for next year's Adidas blockbuster.

1997-98 was a case of the away being better than the home. The previous home was very classic and, for me, the 1997-98 home was a tad too dark.

Agreed, I got 95-97 home and the 97-98 away, the AST sponsor seemed very apt. Never wore the away much as it was a bit skimpy on me. Must dig it out as may fit me now and still like the design.

The shoulders are fucking awful though, as someone posted earlier the 2 combine to look narrow at the shoulders and wider at the belly, it'll be bad on professional athletes, on the average fan it's going to look horrific. If they really wanted this styling they need to add some blue panels on the sides to balance it out better. Which means it doesn't work as Villa home shirt.

Personally not keen, but I'm a retro 80s shirt sort of guy, having worn my actual Umbro to the European Cup final and my European Cup final replica to the Play-Off final!!

My lad who is 21 said "Seen worse, it's OK" and I guess he is nearer the target market than crusty old fuckers like us on here!!!

Loved that 97-98 away, and when studying abroad in the states gave it to a lovely Mexican girl I was with at the time. It's now pretty much the only shirt I don't have in my collection, and they never seem to pop up on eBay.

There is now a retro version of 97/98 (Nostalgia doesn't half catch-up!) but it's missing the 'Reebok' sign so looks a bit naked.

The Kappa logos peel off the real kits after about 5 cool washes anyway, the fake ones would struggle to be shitter than that.

Delivery on the fake kits vary from 2-5 weeks. Depends on the seller, and his feedback.  Mate at work has worn his fake baggies shirts all season, the numbers are peeling off now. He can't fault them. Size wise, the one I've bought I'm normally large/xl and bought an xxl, but that was a kappa shirt. The Nike England Shirts I would go for an xl.

Both of those are nice particularly the black and the badge doesn't seem as out of place on them. The away would look better if it was plain white but the fact it is "striped" like the claret in the home shirt suggests it might be genuine if the home one is.

The general consensus on here seems to be that people would like a design from 81/82 our 40th anniversary. So this Arsenal kit fits the design, kappa, adidas, Nike personally I don't tend to buy shirts anymore( more training wear)so dont really mind.  I'm very old school, all I've ever wanted to see is a modern take on the 80's shirt with claret and blue striped collar and cuffs. I agree. 150th anniversary - 1981 home remake, plus 3 change kits (one for every 50 years) - 1982 away remake, 1957 away remake, and a remake of one of the early kits - maybe the plain black one with a giant red lion in the middle.

I'm sure we could forego a sponsor on the third (or fourth) kit if need be. A decent home and away kit would probably sell more than usual given it'd be the anniversary.

If we went 81, 82 and 57 as 3 of them surely 96 is the only sensible option for the 4th kit so we're celebrating our last win in each of the major trophies in our cabinet.

Maybe theyíve come up with a shit one so they can do a minimal supply run and it wonít run out after two weeks, being early (for Villa) and as itís  last season of the contract, not heaps left over at 60% discount into next summer, when presumably (hopefully) a new supplier comes in? Iíve got no clue, just guessing, but 40 years following Villa makes you a bit cynical 😀

Don't mind it. Isn't one of my favourites but at least it's claret shirt, blue sleeves. White shorts and blue socks is a bonus. I think the stripey affect won't really be noticeable during matches. How much Grealish features in the video is promising,  I think.

It absolutely fine. You wonít see the stripes as pronounced once itís being worn by the players and the whole kit will darken when itís wet. And Jack and Tyrone are wearing it which is a plus even if the video was likely shot pre Euroís. Not the best weíve had, by far not the worst. Itís claret body, blue arms.

Agreed and really like the video, just the right amount of history, the ground and the players rather than larking around in a modelling shoot.

https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/july/Aston-Villa-s-new-2021-22-home-kit/

Also got to be encouraging when you see so much of Jack in the video. If they expected him to be on the way there may have been a bit of judicious editing before release. Kit's growing on me as well, looks fine on the players, and there's only so much you can do with claret body and light blue sleeves.

Because they have to keep making it different from previous shirts..
Inevitably the style changes lead to more and more variations.
It would be great if the club returned to authentic shirts using sustainable materials but that seems unlikely.

I think the 2 major comments about this sum exactly why I find all the angst over the shirt a bit much.

A group of people are upset because it's a bit weird and doesn't look enough like a traditional Villa kit.
Another group of people are upset because it's too similar to last season and is just ripping fans off.

The club have an almost impossible task of keeping both of those 2 group reasonably happy.

I think I said somewhere in this thread that I like a novelty kit once a decade or so - as in 1994 and 1999 and, 2018/19 (not including that 2001/2002 effort).

However, this decade we have had a few striped efforts now plus the non blue sleeve effort. Next year I want something traditional, back to basics. In 1995/96 we went back to basics after the striped effort and I think that should be what we aim for next year.

I would love to see us go back to keeping a home kit for two seasons.

If they wanted to go for the two tone claret option, they'd have been better off including a darker claret lion, 1874 or any other detailing against a lighter claret background on the main body of the shirt.

As per the 95/96 effort.

Instead of naff looking barcode efforts.

I don't think it would work these days as part of the away kit would be the same colour as the home team's. Same reason we sometimes have to wear claret shorts if the home team is wearing white ones.

Not sure how you can be up in arms about it as the markup on the shirts are massive. I went into the club shop the day before the new kit was released and you could get last years player issue shirts which were £90 down to £30.

If it was pink and lilac I'd understand people being up in arms and pissed off etc. It's claret and blue with some detailing. People won't complain in a month when we start playing again.

There's been a £30 off discount code doing the rounds on twitter, which loads have jumped on. Home shirt for £27; training tops for £2; shorts and socks for postage. It popped up half an hour ago, and has just been stopped on the online store. But someone's going to get hauled over the coals tomorrow morning.

Leighton, formally of the parish (I think) was up in arms about that last night. He wasn't a happy chappy..

Wasnít it a staff discount code? If so I wouldnít be shocked if everyone got a refund email at some point. Fair play if they get them at that price though

I don't normally bother with the new kit, though the discount code promising £30 off and the sense of momentum we have presently, meant I was tempted.

Yeah, reminds me of a chipper I saw in Rhos-on-Sea in North Wales which had a big banner saying "Celebrating the 25th anniversary of winning the best chip shop in Conwy award", or words to that effect.  Seemed to be an odd thing to celebrate ... not doing anything notable for 24 years in what's a fairly small geographic area.

The 150th 'birthday' seems a more appropriate thing to celebrate.

Just came to say the same (looks good). A bit different but just takes me a view or two to get used to it, I wonder if others shift too? Apparently change is inherent in the nature of reality, so said someone wiser than I.

an embroidered badge would look so much better

I'd like a leather kit.

Isnít there a thread somewhere else on the site for that sort of thing?!!

Haha. Point me in the right direction, mate!

The club know how much angst this is creating for supporters, so assuming the bid is now 'officially official', why don't they release a statement with either a big 'Fuck off, he's not for sale' or 'Yes, we've accepted the bid - Jack will now hold talks with City'?

Or from a marketing point of view - maybe it is just very popular - things do run out when they are eagerly sought after and as shirts have a limited shelf life of a season, judging how may to pre order must be very difficult

I bet Man Utd don't have stock issues. We need vast improvements,  all over

I guess all we have going for us is four useable stands.

The North is a disgrace, the Witton has a bad name and cramped space..... The Trinity isn't what it was, and the Holte is smaller than before.

We've gone to the dogs.

It's all good fun taking the piss out of Flin5tone (and rightly so a lot of the time), but in fairness I think it's reasonable to critisice people having to hold for over an hour to get through to the ticket office and understocking shirts for what, the third or 4th year running?

Presumably it will be a pastel green as per the font in the Twitter post and training kits rather than a fluorescent colour?

Watching the game yesterday with all the fans banners, really made me hope the owners being the old badge back tooÖor at least a modernised version of it.

Saw the blue one on Twitter earlier but didn't give it much credence. The black one was leaked with what turned out to be the actual home and away kits so hope/think it will be the 3rd kit.

I didn't like the 95-96 blue shirt but my uncle (who hates Blose and Rangers) did and bought it. Not for me but still much better than the one above.

It's grown on me. It isn't a very Blosey blue for those who worry about that sort of thing. Think it will be regarded as a bit of a classic in years to come. I'm very happy with all the kits this year, and we haven't had to endorse illegal Israeli settlements or murdering animals for "sport" along the way. Well done all.

I've been a bit of a fan of the change shirts these last few years, even last year's black one, but don't think I'll be getting this one. Yet, anyways. Maybe it'll grow on me. Couldn't care less that's it's blue. Those twats don't have a monopoly on that colour. We play in claret and blue, for starters. It looks decent in person, and seems to be very popular judging by how may were already wearing it yesterday. Much better than the horrible army style third shirt we had last year which I had forgotten all about. The fact that I've forgotten it shows how rarely we wear our third kit, so those that don't like it won't have to see it very often.

I agree it is definitely alot nicer than that grey one last year. This one looks a lot nicer.  I love it

My first thoughts were that it is strikingly similar to the Scotland 1986 shirt for world cup. Wonder if the shorts will have that fetching navy band across the middle to complete the look?

I don't know how they coped, but they've only had one proper white away kit since 1968.

Does anyone actually know why we have a 3rd kit? Other than the fact that every other  team does and it allows the club to squeeze a few more pips out of our fans, thereís absolutely no need. How often will we play in it this season?

Teddy Bears is Glaswegian rhyming slang for 'Gers'. It honestly does work in the Glasgow accent!

As an aside, Scottish rhyming slang pisses all over its cockney cousin.

I assume they are paying us the most. Versus an identikit solution from a prominent brand paying less overall because weíre just not that attractive to them. The likes of Adidas, Puma etc are all spread so thin across many sports, not just football and they are going to pay more for the top clubs leaving much less of a share for the rest. You get the privilege of their brand without any of their true personal attention.

Seems like a good business idea when you consider the sportswear market. Even if it does all feel a bit manufactured, but really who cares what shirts the players are wearing if we're winning.

Fair play to Brentford.

We obviously can't follow suit due to the change of kit suppliers but I'd be more than happy if they decided to alternate the changing of the home & away strips going forward.

Also no need for a third strip!

One of the away kits did one better... the Venglos 90-91 Umbro shirt made an appearance at Anfield in 92-93.

Going up to villa for a stadium tour Sunday. With Black Friday sales, I'm tempted to buy myself my first ever villa shirt again. The 1980 home. I've noticed the umbro logo has now been removed. Does anybody know why. All the retro kits look a bit 'lost' without the sports brand logo. Thanks

because they're not manufactured by the actual manufacturer from the original shirt

It used to be the case that the Premier League "Fans' Charter" specified that kits should be kept for two years. Obviously it was just completely ignored.

Yes the so called replica shirts are made from dodgy material.
The club shop and its merchandise is a shit show.
