Had an interesting chat to someone with decent itk yesterday. He said they are going to widen the NS sometime next season. The idea is to keep it open and build around it  before removing the roof and finishing it off. Bit like what City and Liverpool have done.

That seems eminently sensible at this point, a creative solution that doesn’t see 1/6 of the ground shut for a season or so…

Yes and it'll almost certainly pass given it'll be smaller and less disruptive than the plan that was agreed before.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

1. If this is the plan, it is wishful thinking to imagine they would do this work only to rip it down in a few years to do it 'properly'.
2. I remember when the new Witton Lane was built and they attempted to incorporate the old stand. Didn't exactly work out when they had to rebuild the lower tier a year later and then permanently ruin how it looked at the Holte corner as a result.
3. If that's the plan, the roof probably needs to come off first as the towers are in the way of 'widening' the stand.
4. I know that when we previously rebuilt stands we were able to get fans into them in stages (lower tier Holte for the Inter game in '94 for example. I asked this question previously about the new North stand and was told health and safety has changed in 30 years. That's a fair reply. But by the same token are we sure, then, that we can have fans in an old stand that is being 'extended' with its roof 'coming off?

It makes sense to do as much of the work as possible while keeping the stand open. There's no way they're knocking the whole thing down and losing the revenue for a whole season or more. The only other long term optio is to do what Everton have done but that would require a large piece of land. We've been down that road many many times on here and there's no easy option so no point speculating. I believe the long term goal will be to buy up properties around VP but that will take decades.

Re: point 3. The support pillars.That's probably the biggest challenge but one that's surmountable. Obviously widening of the stand cant happen until those pillars are removed. The supports for a new cantilever roof can be installed behind the stand.The completed piling would be a huge step forward. Services could be installed in readiness.

The most popular club moving to the biggest stadium seems like a big story to me, tbf. They better not get a fucking penny from taxpayers when we are slashing aid and benefits.
