Numerous great Managers down the years have stated that having a top quality keeper is the base on which you build it all. He is head and shoulders above every keeper I’ve seen down the Villa in the last 30 years.

He's fantastic but they haven't been all bad, Bosnich, Friedal and Guzan were all top drawer.

"we gifted them a goal but for large parts of it I was pleased with what we did"

that's a "win" then..

I felt for Bruce a bit, he just looked and sounded lost, broken. He must have millions in the bank, you sometimes wonder why he puts himself through it. The game has moved on and left him well behind. He's make a good pundit I reckon.

The Geordies are full of venom about him on their threads. They also not happy with the pundits for defending him as if he’s got a poisoned chalice and that he’s doing his best. Sounds familar.

Yes, its natural to only remember the final season but he was very good before that.

I can remember him playing 1 good game vs qpr (at home) and the rest were meh! He certainly wasn't in the same league as the likes of Bosnich and Friedel and that's without thinking of the relegation season when he was just plain awful.

I think some managers just have it in their blood and want to carry on managing. Hodgson is 73 and Warnock is 70 and they are still going. Bruce would make a decent pundit  actually but they even seem to be employing younger ones nowadays.

Guazan was mostly awful. Couple of good saves here and there, but he certainly was never top drawer. His career trajectory after leaving us has been strictly down hill, and he's still only 36.

Konsa has the uncoachable skill of just knowing where he needs to be, it all looks so simple.

now who does that remind you of?

He had a good season. I recall at the start of that season I said Guzan and Benteke would keep us up and so being right was quite memorable for me as you can imagine.

Quite hard to compare keepers. Martinez is excellent but Heaton may have developed to be as good.. He never really got a chance  for long enough to say.

Earlier keepers appeared rubbish but played behind leaky back fours.

Watching the second goal again, Newcastle had every player in their box at the moment Traore shot. Eleven players failing to come even remotely close to laying a glove on either Grealish having two touches and Traore one. They look fooked.

One thing I will say about Guzan is that save against QPR is perhaps the best save I've ever seen a Villa keeper pull off.
