The thing is Southampton haven't had to be that good. A corner & 2 freekicks.

We've stood off, given them set pieces & lumped the ball to Watkins. We've got to have more than one way to play.

It's all a bit hit & hope.

This has been shocking because we clearly haven't sought to consider Southampton's strengths. They look like a coherent team where everyone knows exactly what their role is and we are an individualistic mess. Hoping for a bit of luck or a moment of genius. Beyond awful!

it's like groundhog day supporting this club - no matter how much changes we'll always return to our default position of shite.

We don't just lose, we fall apart.

Barkley and McGinn have done nothing.

How can a team winning 4 in 4 turn to absolute shite in a game and a half?

The doom Merchants out in force.
judging on the last 90 minutes of football they're probably pretty accurate.

The biggest thing for me was we look half-arsed, it's like we're playing with no belief and no passion, which is WEIRD given the start we've had.  Forget the end scoreline now, I just want to see us compete second half, give these an actual game, like I'm sure this group of players can.

Barkley and McGinn have been awol for most of the game but the shambles has been the concession of free kicks in dangerous places.

They play to engage free kicks in dangerous places ( a la Ashely Young) and we fall into the obvious trap.

We've had a few ourselves but apart from the Traore effort, the delivery has not compared to theirs.

Smith said last week that we didn't fare well after going a goal down, and it's more of the same today.

Southampton are now like Man U. They could select 11 random fans and still walk over us every time.

Midfield being over run, yet no change or calls from the bench.
If we carry on like this it will be a real hammering, I have watched both leeds and Southampton this year and could have said what to expect !!!!
We got our Villa back

We are being exposed tactically. The coaching has to be questioned.

Difficult now for Smith. Watkins totally isolated and outnumbered, Barklay and grealish need to be closer, but the McGinn and Luiz have been completely out muscled in the middle. I think the only change I can think would make any kind of difference is to bring Davis on to support Watkins and make that big fecker at the back have to think a bit. Not sure who I’d bring off though

Well it's all going very well so far.  In the last 90 minutes of football at home, scored 0 conceded 6. And it could and should have been worse, the VAR decision was fortunate and Cash is lucky not to get a red for denying a goal scoring opportunity. I suppose both Leeds and Southampton have become something of bogey teams for us at VP (along with the entire "big 6" and Leicester) but fucking hell we could at least turn up.

It's the stupidity of it that gets me - Mcginn marking a giant at a corner, gifting two free kicks to probably the best free kick taker in the league, and Mings deciding not to jump on the second one so it goes straight over his head and in.

Genius.

I'd like to think the second half can only be better, but the way we are playing it will only get worse.

If we can't counterattack then we can't do anything. Why are Villa always the team behind the fucking times, it's been decades since we at the forefront of coaching and style and I'm absolutely fucking sick of it.
