It's also just everyone expecting we'll need to sell a big player to stay afloat financially and thinking it could be him.

Realistically, would we get much more than £25m for him now, which wouldn’t make much of a dent in PSR.  Sadly, I think eyes have to be on Rogers or Uri as our main bankable assets.

It seems to be pretty widely accepted that he's going in the summer. Why? Fuck that. Is there anything actually to it, or is it because there's an expectation it'll carry from last year?

I think that the club wants a goalkeeper in his early 20s on half the wages to hopefully sort that position out for the next decade.

That depends on two things, the right new player (Lammens, Chevalier, Garcia etc last summer, Trafford and maybe the latter two again this summer) being available and the market for Emi being there.

He'll spend a month being one of the most talked about players in the world, and I think the club would be delighted for him to have a stormer, someone to make him their statement signing off the back of it, bring in a profit and open up a bit of wages leeway.

Like last summer, I don’t think either party is pushing for it, but I think everyone will be happy to shake hands and move to the next chapter if the opportunity is there.

Thats my view - a world class keeper for at least the next 2 years.  Why sell as his value will not be as much as hes worth to us.

Yeah, it's his wages that are a big issue rather than just what fee we'd get for him with SCR to think about.

How much leeway would we get?  My understanding is our top players are on between 100k - 150k

Emi must be at the top end - but in all honestly how many GKs will we find ready for a CL challange for much less?

Yes, I was all for offloading him last summer, but it’s now reached the point he’s worth more to us than he would likely command in the market.  Don’t get me wrong, we do need to sign a strong and young back up that can progress to being our regular number 1 in 18 months or so.

Most places suggest £150k per week, but £160k and £200k also pop up.

Apparently Man City are paying Trafford £70k, Barcelona are paying Garcia around the same.

I imagine our finances nerds are looking at those amounts and thinking how nice it would be if we were paying our goalkeeper that much.

He tested me and my feelings for him last summer and the start of this, but he’s won me back. Love him again and his madness. I still contend FFP/SCR was the catalyst to all the nonsense and it’s very possible his hand was forced to find a move. He didn’t handle it well either. But for me it’s the past and I hope this season he leads us back to the CL qualification and EL glory.

I've completely forgiven him and he needs to stay. There's possibly five more years for him at the top level and the next keeper will be a step down.

Any more shenanigans I wouldn't be able to get past though. Behave yourself, Emiliano!

He’s on something like £200k week I believe.  At some point the club will need to shift those wages, especially as he gets older.

Not sure how true, but social media suggests there’s an Emi documentary coming out on Netflix.  That boost to his, and the club’s, profile might mean the wages look more sustainable.

Depends how much 5 points minimum is worth at the end of the season because he’s worth at least that

If we can afford Sancho's wages for a season, we can afford Emi's. Having seen of his saves this season, and some of the keepers 'elite' teams in the CL have, I wouldn't be in a massive rush to sell unless we get a very good offer. Plus, like SJM, he brings a lot more to the team than simply what he does on the field in his position.
