I predicted all this happening in the transfer thread. I would quote but it's locked.

He can see Villa have no ambition and is engineering a move. We've seen this countless times before!

And while we're repeating ourselves, I still maintain that there isn't anywhere realistic* for him to go who could afford to buy him.

(*Man Utd if De Gea leaves caveat applies)

Neuer has fallen out with Bayern, for replacing his mate/gk coach, so they could be looking for a keeper.  Chelsea and Spurs will be looking too.

I’d prefer to keep the player but if he forces a move i think there’d be a few bidding which should mean we get a good price.

Spurs don’t offer anything substantially better than what he has with us. He is going to command £100m in todays market. Fucking Kepa was over £70m. So when or if he goes it will be to a club that wants to lash out that kind of money on a keeper that has a specific need for one. And there are very few of those clubs around.

I would be very sad to see Emi leave. But I wouldn’t blame him for wanting to kick on. We’ve had 3 years to get our act together whilst he’s been with the club. Even a cup or European football might at least sate the appetite or demonstrate tangible progress as an argument to persuade a player to stay.

Of course they do - they're in the European places most years or at the very least competing for them.

We're in the bottom half of the table, midway at best most years.

Yes exactly - we all love Villa so see the history etc, but look at it dispassionately why would a player pick us over Spurs? Until we act ambitiously and start getting into Europe regularly we will always be on the back foot.

I wouldn't be amazed if £100m splurges on a player might be something we see less of, given the PL seems to be finally doing something about financial doping (obviously we will see how that plays out).  I don't think anybody is likely to buy Martinez for £100m, and that his release clause will be half that - I'm only basing that on fuck all but gut feel though, so who knows.  It does feel rather inevitable he'll leave though and the sum we get is kind of irrelevant, unless we need to sell to buy of course.

If he just wants European football then he could join any number of clubs in Europe. But at this stage he’s not settling for Europa League which is at best where Spurs will end up. And they will likely boot their manager yet again, and more than likely sell Harry Kane. So going into next season it’s probably better, but if you’re Emi Martinez, WC winner, desiring CL football, are you going to Tottenham?

If he does leave the pain would be lessened by him publicly laughing at a suggestion of going to spuds.

They'd probably be favourites to be in the CL next season if Lloris didn't keeping chucking them into his own net.

I didn't say he'd go to Spurs, I took issue with the suggestion they don't offer anything 'substantially better' than we do. That's absolute nonsense as a quick look at the table will tell you.

Europa League is also significantly better than mid table mediocrity.

The market for Emi would be very small based on need and buying power needed. If he goes anywhere i think it would be the red half of Manchester.

They fell out with him first for him breaking his leg skiing which he wasn't allowed to do. But they fixed it already in January by buying the second best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga in Yann Sommer.

Chelsea - obviously a law unto their crazy selves, but when he's not injured there's nothing to suggest they're not happy with Mendy. Until that changes (and it clearly could) I'm not worried about them.

Spurs - as per posts passim

It’s in context to what he is looking at as a player in his career, not what you or I are looking right now in terms of the table. So in that sense Spurs isn’t substantially better. If you look at the table then playing for Fulham is better than playing for Villa right now.

And all this is because he stated he’d like to play in the CL. I’m sure Jordan Pickford would like to also but despite being every bit as utter shit and without question right now significantly worse, Everton have kept a hold of him. Yet the mere mention of CL from one of our players and he’s off.

Spurs are on a different level entirely to us, not just now but over the last several years.

Pretending otherwise is just nuts. And I don't like admitting it, but they are. It's not just some freak 'well, they're having an exceptional season' Fulham thing.

This club has not finished in the top half of the PL for the last 12 years, and wasn't even in it for 3 of those years.

Not only are they operating in a different league to us, they're also the subject of immense amounts of media love-in, whereas we have become an irrelevance.
