Sinisalo on bench so I guess Martinez is injured. He was a doubt for Thursday IIRC.

Gerrard has said was out of his hands and that Martinez has a knee injury.

There were rumours of a knee injury in the week before the Burnley game so that seems fair, probably tried to get through the season with it but didn't feel right.

Ok well would have preferred him saved for this one.
He's travelled up to the game today and there maybe late fitness tests after he didn't complete training Friday said Stevie on Sky Sports

Steven Gerrard will soon be revealing the long-term Aston Villa captain.
Gerrard is an advocate for experience and players to be winners and leaders

Under Dean Smith on Captains, I proposed that Jack Grealish be appointed captain. Now, I recommend Emi Martinez in place of Mings. Ahead of McGinn. Emi is the player who ticks all those boxes in what SG is looking for. Although Ashley Young of course makes sense as a club captain, Martinez is the fit for long-term captain because he is literally the first name on the team sheet and a first-team regular.

Further evidence to support the case and that Gerrard would find noteworthy.
Martinez professionalism off the field.
And a highly competitive nature on it.
His high level of consistency and that he demonstrates that in our matches with what I call a win at all costs attitude, as well as his winning mentality with Argentina in the Copa America.

I'm more than fine with Mings continuing, but the very fact Gerrard is having competition for places and theres a challenge at centre back to be in the team as well as the consistency factor, then perhaps Mings needs to step aside.
A Captain is expected to play with regularlity right?

Besides as much as it may take some of Mings' responsibility away, there may be a benefit to TM focusing on his performance, given his natural tendency to be vocal and oversee and things both in defence and generally outfield he just not be the captain.

To summarise my case, based on Gerrard's criteria, Emi Martinez should be named long-term captain of our football club pending the transfer of an super obvious candidate.

Up the Villa.

Unless Mings is off, he'll be the captain

I want the Captain to be vocal, call out the ref when decisions are going against us. Don’t think a goalkeeper can do that.

I'm just matching up SG criteria in terms of what he wants in a Captain.
Martinez is a proven winner, among other highly desirable qualities.
Players outfield can step to and be vocal and challenge decisions and do so regardless of captaincy, can't they?

I get what you mean about Martinez footy, but a 'keeper is never the best because they can't be having a word with the ref all the time.

Mings is a leader but I'm not sure he'll play enough. Digne is a possibility, Coutinho would be another choice, or perhaps Ramsey will be asked.

Has there been any suggeston that we are changing captain? So long as Mings is playing, he should be captain, IMO. He's inspirational, and annoys exactly the right sort of people, off the pitch, too. Top bloke.

It's a complete mystery why Leeds fans don't like Mings, I can't put my finger on it.

Watching those twats in that stand getting all irate and “hold me back” when he went and applauded them was just about the funniest moment of the season.

Absolutely brilliant.
Taking the piss out of a bunch of enormous twats....but with real class!
A wonderful moment. Thank you Tyrone.
