Blimey, next thing you know there'll be a separate competition for Cup winners. Imagine that! Can't think what they'd possibly call it, mind...

Mental. So 96 teams will be in some sort of European Competition next year. Totally devaluing the whole concept.

In 1981/82, we were one of 128 clubs to play first round games.

yeah but they were league winners. I seriously can't see the point of us winning the Caribou, stretching our squad to breaking point  to compete in 4 competitions for the booby prize of a Europa place. There's clubs the british sides played last season who i'm still not entirely sure where they're from. This idea makes the CWC look like a competition for the elite.

They weren't all league winners - there were 33 clubs in the European Cup.

sorry misread it. I'm old skool so champions league should be champions (its sort of implied by the name), Europa should be 2nd and i have no problem with cup winners, but winning the caribou cup to compete in a competition probably weaker than it.........nah.

What about winning an honour in itself? I agree that European qualification is little reward but the idea of a Villa captain lifting that wonderful 3 handled trophy at Wembley? In a hearbeat.

If there was no European qualification whatsoever I would still want to win the cup. It's a major competition. Aston Villa should be in the business of trying to win it.

Edit: basically, what Nev said.

yeah no problem with that. just play the kids in the conference or whatever its called. We'd probably still get to the semis with the arse in it anyway.

Am I the only one who quite likes the thought of returning to the good old days of 3 European tournaments?

I'd be fine with the return of the CWC. This is more like the Watney Cup.

Win the League Cup and then refuse to play in the corresponding European jamboree.
That should be the plan.
