Then lost to Cambridge Utd at home and are out first round yesterday !
Didn't even notice they were missing !

So this will be our first game of the season then?

Well according to scheduling fixtures this 2nd round cup tie would be the first match. Midweek say 15/16/17 sept?
Of course Villa kick off a week later in the league because Man City were involved in European competition (failed ha) and need a 30 day recovery rest period . So Villa play cup before the Premier league match which is on Sunday 20th . And perhaps Cup again the following week !

Should have a good chance against anyone else really.

Draw about 2pm today providing the final 1st round match going on Brentford v Wycombe isn't a tie t 90 as match will then go straight to pens. (1-0 at the mo)

No extra time in these Carabo cup ties

We'll get 2 draws for the price of one so should have 3 teams that get to worry about us before a ball is kicked.
2nd round draw then also drawn and listed opponents for the 3rd made with an either /or (for the week after)

Proper working class southerners, Blues. Not like the William Hagues who rock up at Vile Park in their Austin Allegros, thinking they're better than everyone in the northern half.

Or Bjarnason!

Decent draw. For 2nd round . Chance for Davis to build some confidence. Hopefully play the Tuesday and give people like cash and other 1st teamers a decent run out for 60mins . Then week after Jota and Lansbury can have their go with perhaps Ramsey playing part in both

Happy enough with that draw. Bet Arsenal and Leicester relived not to play us !

Seems like the  'A' of Aston Villa was being stuck to the 'B' of Burton and Bristol City

Up the Villa.

Can remember Adomah missing a penalty and then somehow firing the rebound over from about 5 yards. Think SB wanted to sell him after that.

Just like to point out the fixture congestion due to Sheff Utd match being moved to 21st

The 3rd round is scheduled to play 22nd/23rd so providing Villa beat Burton we'll have ourselves a team and squad selection issue there.
And after the lesson the u21/academy got taught v Sunderland in losing 8-1 not sure what sort of line up we are best putting out .

September fixtures
EFL Cup 15th
Prem 21st
EFL Cup 22nd/23rd (potential)
Prem 27th

Yes, good point. Its generally accepted that you give a club at least three days (well, sleeps) between games so what's going on with this? The Sheff Utd game was moved before all the Sep games were confirmed for TV, wasn't it? Not sure why.

I recall last season  Liverpool  weren't able to move the scheduled fixture  v Villa.
And we enjoyed a 5-0 win !

I know but that was a high-profile anomaly when Liverpool had already agreed to play in a meaningless competition halfway across the world and they didn't have enough spare midweeks to fit us in.

It would be a bit crap if we had to do similar and play a youth team in a competition that we nearly won six months ago.
Title: Re: CARABAO CUP 2020/21 (Round 2 vs Burton [A])

Itís a product of the truncated season unfortunately. Itís exactly the same for Sheffield United (if we both get through the second round), Wolves and Manchester City. Think Tottenham have to play both a third round game and a Europa game that same week too.

Not ideal at all, but we played an almost completely different XI in the earlier rounds last year (as did most of our opponents).

Although on the other side of this is the fact that this season is going to break the players.  There is another three international matches on top of all this next month.

So 3rd round is next week official dates Tues 22nd &wed 23rd (maybe 24th?) soon after the sheff utd match

Think rather have Northampton away as more suitable fixture to negotiate whichever players we start with.

Interesting what team and what day we have to play it as have Sheffield utd of course first on 21st monday

Then potentially  its another quick turn round from league to round 4 of Carabo . Ties on Tuesday 29 Wednesday  30 September!

For me priority is the Fulham 28th and then Liverpool week later around 3rd October date to be confirmed

Looks like we have a squad competition to at least put out a decent team for next 2 rounds maybe even bedding in new signings and giving youngsters a go in process.
All players need much needed minutes so need to use squad wisely

With the reduced season, International and European fixtures there is no room in the calendar throughout OCt and Nov and most of Dec to fit it in. I quite like it but Iíve always been a fan of the League Cup.

Back in the 70s, they would play 3 games in 4 days over easter. 2nd replays in the cup, none of this knocking off early and going home after a quick penalty shoot out.

Four rounds done by the start of October! When is the final, Guy Fawkes night ?

That made me lol (as the kids say).

It does all seem a bit rushed. Is there any need for it really?

With the reduced season, International and European fixtures there is no room in the calendar throughout OCt and Nov and most of Dec to fit it in. I quite like it but Iíve always been a fan of the League Cup.

I like it as well and wonder if they might do it again in future seasons.

Agreed and one of the advantages of knowing the next round in advance is that a manager can decide whether "to go for it".

We should get through to the last 8 with a 50% chance of getting West Brom/Fulham/Everton/West Ham. Worth taking seriously this year.

Yes and the semi final is a one off tie.

And I think Arsenal and Liverpool ,Man Utd ,Spurs would put their lesser lights and youth out to play so don't need to fear them as much

Chelsea and Man City because of squads I would be most concerned about.

So have you seen what happens if  Villa  win this Carabo cup

The winners of this season's cup will not qualify for the Europa League as in the past, but will instead go into the Uefa Europa Conference League (UECL).

They will enter at the play-off phase, the round before the group stages.

The Europa Conference League, which will have 32 teams in the group stages, will be played on Thursday nights along with the Europa League, which is reduced from 48 to 32 teams.

The UECL groups are likely to contain teams from some of Europe's smaller countries, as well as teams who finish sixth in Spain, Italy and Germany and win the play-offs - in addition to clubs that lose their Europa League qualifiers.

The winners of the UECL qualify for the following season's Europa League.

yeah but they were league winners. I seriously can't see the point of us winning the Caribou, stretching our squad to breaking point  to compete in 4 competitions for the booby prize of a Europa place. There's clubs the british sides played last season who i'm still not entirely sure where they're from. This idea makes the CWC look like a competition for the elite.

What's so unappealing is the word 'conference' and the competing against lower rated teams.
It's essentially the  3rd tier of European competition.

Can see fun matches against the likes of leagues from Republic of Ireland , Northern Ireland and Conaghs Key or the New Saints from Wales. Teams from likes of Estonia , Iceland, Gilbratar , Faroe Islands, Malta, Armenia we all be playing off in qualifiers to compete in the league

So there are trips there to be had if thinking long term and positively.

Still get the glorious failures of those  eliminated in the Europa League play-offs who drop into the competition.

The rest of leagues are made up  from the winners of each Conference League qualifier.

If there was no European qualification whatsoever I would still want to win the cup. It's a major competition. Aston Villa should be in the business of trying to win it.
