Just to highlight that Aston Villa first competitive game of the season will come in the 2nd round of the League cup week commencing September 14th
Can we go one better this season in the league cup!
Good effort last season and today will see Villa in the draw for the next rounds of the Carabao Cup.
2nd & 3rd round draw made after the Brentford v Wycombe 1st round match.
Let's go !
The draw round is regionalised in 2 sections North and South.
And drawn for round 2 and 3.
2nd Round is week starting September 14
3rd Round is week starting September 21
Villa are number 1 in the north section of the draw. Our opponents will come from one of the following :
2 - Barnsley
3 - Blackburn Rovers
4 - Bradford City
5 - Burnley
6 - Burton Albion
7 - Derby County
8 - Everton
9 - Fleetwood Town
10 - Harrogate Town
11 - Hull City
12 - Leeds United
13 - Lincoln City
14 - Middlesbrough
15 - Morecambe
16 - Newcastle United
17 - Oldham Athletic
18 - Port Vale
19 - Preston North End
20 - Rochdale
21 - Salford City
22 - Sheffield United
23 - Sheffield Wednesday
24 - Stoke City
25 - West Brom
26 - Wolves
-
Where are Small Heath 👀
-
So this will be our first game of the season then?
-
Salford City at home please.
-
Hopefully avoid Everton.
Should have a good chance against anyone else really.
-
Rochdale away please, then it should be on TV and my local club get a financial bonus - that is apart from the £1 Million paid them in January by Wolves for Luke Mathieson !
-
It’s going to be Wolves away isn’t it.
-
Where are Small Heath 👀
They were in the southern half of the first round draw anyway.
-

Proper working class southerners, Blues. Not like the William Hagues who rock up at Vile Park in their Austin Allegros, thinking they're better than everyone in the northern half.
-
Burton away
-
Burton away
-
Has it started yet?
-
Yep we have got burton
-
That answers my question!
-
Albion of course get Harrogate at home.
-
Everton v Salford
-
At least Albert can't take the penalty
-
And onto the 3rd round...
-
Bristol city or Northampton vs Villa or Burton
-
Didn't we get knocked out by Burton a couple of years ago in a limp-dick display under Bruce ?

Yup https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45254597

Can remember Adomah missing a penalty and then somehow firing the rebound over from about 5 yards. Think SB wanted to sell him after that.
-
So do we play the kids, a full strength first team or a mixture?
-
Relatively pleased with the draw but apparently Bristol City "owe us a hiding", presumably a FFP related "hiding".
-
-
André Moreira. Remember him?
-
-
So do we play the kids, a full strength first team or a mixture?
Would think a mix of some youngsters and some first team/reserve players
-
mostly shit players
-
André Moreira. Remember him?
He was dreadful, but saved a penalty against Colchester
-
Bit late to the party SE. William Hague's father was a rag and bone man with a handcart. Perfect pedigree for a Nose.
-
André Moreira. Remember him?
He was dreadful, but saved a penalty against Colchester
Yeovil wasn't it?
-
Haha, may well have been.
-
André Moreira. Remember him?
He was dreadful, but saved a penalty against Colchester
He's now letting in goals back at Belenenses.
-
Heythhththay Chris Vaddell
-
Then it's Bristol City or Northampton Town if we get through to round three.
-
So do we play the kids, a full strength first team or a mixture?
Normally I'd stick the kids in but as it's our first proper game, perhaps not.
-

I'd like to see a mix of our regular first-teamers, fringe players and a couple of the better U23s.
-
Yeah same for me Leeg
-
Massive rivalry game for Bristol City if we meet...
-
They are hardly our rivals.
-
Yeah same for me Leeg
Would be nice but I expect Smith will play it safe and go for a strong team with maybe Ramsey and Vassilev on the bench.
-
They are hardly our rivals.
For them for some odd reason. We certainly don’t give a fuck about them.
-
Suppose our academy is playing in the Football League Trophy on Tuesday, so get to see how our youngsters shape up (I still think that it's farcical that Premier Youth teams are allowed in it).
-
Bristol city or Northampton vs Villa or Burton
Northampton v Villa in round 3 would be a repeat of 50 years ago. Maybe we can go one better in the competition than we did that season.
-
Just to let people know the match Vs Burton will be shown live on Sky Sports 745pm Tuesday September 15
-
Thank you.

Even better.

Ideally us and Northampton go through. I can go then go watch us in the 3rd round from the hill looking over the ground at sixfields (no doubt being asked to go home shortly after kick off).
-
Yes, good point. Its generally accepted that you give a club at least three days (well, sleeps) between games so what's going on with this? The Sheff Utd game was moved before all the Sep games were confirmed for TV, wasn't it? Not sure why.
-
I know but that was a high-profile anomaly when Liverpool had already agreed to play in a meaningless competition halfway across the world and they didn't have enough spare midweeks to fit us in.
It would be a bit crap if we had to do similar and play a youth team in a competition that we nearly won six months ago.
-
It’s a product of the truncated season unfortunately. It’s exactly the same for Sheffield United (if we both get through the second round), Wolves and Manchester City. Think Tottenham have to play both a third round game and a Europa game that same week too.
Not ideal at all, but we played an almost completely different XI in the earlier rounds last year (as did most of our opponents).
-
Although on the other side of this is the fact that this season is going to break the players. There is another three international matches on top of all this next month.
-
Four rounds done by the start of October! When is the final, Guy Fawkes night ?
-
Looks like the Villa match will be played Thursday 24th September. That's anything to go by on Sheffield Utd , Brighton playing their cup ties tomorrow who both played on Monday
Then the round 4 match Thursday 1st October.
Makes sense
Let's get Round 3 done with first.
-

Hallowe'en for the semi-finals at this rate.
-
Looking like Bristol City at the moment.
-
Bristol City it is then.
-
Four rounds done by the start of October! When is the final, Guy Fawkes night ?
That made me lol (as the kids say).
It does all seem a bit rushed. Is there any need for it really?

With the reduced season, International and European fixtures there is no room in the calendar throughout OCt and Nov and most of Dec to fit it in. I quite like it but I’ve always been a fan of the League Cup.
-
For those wondering
Round 5– 22/23 December
Semi-Finals - 5/6 January 2021 one off tie.
Carabao Cup Final - 28 February 2021

Yes must negotiate the Weimann and Baker derby first !
I see Chris Martin has come in from the cold and now plays at Bristol City
-
Back in the 70s, they would play 3 games in 4 days over easter. 2nd replays in the cup, none of this knocking off early and going home after a quick penalty shoot out.
-
Gotta feel for Lee Johnson...when they played us away we had "two home ends" and now when they play us at home they have no home ends due to Covid... ;D ;D ;D

They sacked him anyway so he'll probably be cheering us on.

This pun deserves genuflection.

I like it as well and wonder if they might do it again in future seasons.
-
They'll need to sort out the clashes with European qualifying rounds though.
-
Notice we are not on Sky now that the big 6 are now in the competition

Rich.

Just noticed that the draw for the 4th Round is after the Brighton Pompey game tonight.

Footy-Vill told us last year.
-
Good work Lee.
-
Stoke or Gillingham.
-
Decent drawer if we get past our rivals at Ashton Gate.
-
The draw says if we beat Bristol City we will be at home to either Wolves or Gillingham What a balls up by the Mirror website i just heard the dogheads knocked out by Stoke
-
Decent draw. And a few “ big guns” playing each other as well.
It’s our year.
-
Great chance to get to the last eight
-
Could only really have been better if Everton had got Manure, but that was excellent work by Lee
-
Really hope he takes Bristol City seriously after that draw.
-

Agreed and one of the advantages of knowing the next round in advance is that a manager can decide whether "to go for it".
We should get through to the last 8 with a 50% chance of getting West Brom/Fulham/Everton/West Ham. Worth taking seriously this year.
-
Every year.
-
Wolverhampton Barcelona out already ,total domination of football further delayed lol
-
Every year.
That's also a given for me but you know what I mean.
-

Was he working with heated balls ?
-

Bristols titties ! Hahahaha !
-
If we get through.
-
I never doubted you, mate 🙂
-
When's the draw for the 5th round?
-
I’d imagine straight after the 4th round ties next week. Qtr finals are the week before Xmas.
-
Stoke at home for us then I can see us beating them.
-
Confirmed for next Thursday at 7pm, not chosen as a TV fixture so will presumably be available if you pay a tenner again.
-
Had a good draw so far, would love us to get to another final again only with a win this time.
-
A statement from the EFL : "In accordance with Carabao Cup Rules, Tottenham Hotspur have been awarded with a bye to progress to Round Four of the Carabao Cup and will now play Chelsea on Tuesday 29 September"
Well I never.
Rather unfair considering the circumstances.
-
Don't worry, our new boys Odoi and Ross (with Tammy's help) will knock Spudz out and one more chance for them to win a trophy in a year ending in '1' (when exactly was the last?) will be gone.
-
Typical EFL. Begging for a COVID handout from the Premier league but when it comes to helping out one of their own, Feck 'em. Rules are Rules. Talk about inflexible.

F#$king Spurs, how dare they accept that against the O's. They should immediately withdraw and accept to allow the O's to go through.
-
f*ck that. Play the kids next round.
-
Blimey, next thing you know there'll be a separate competition for Cup winners. Imagine that! Can't think what they'd possibly call it, mind...
-
Mental. So 96 teams will be in some sort of European Competition next year. Totally devaluing the whole concept.

In 1981/82, we were one of 128 clubs to play first round games.
-
yeah but they were league winners. I seriously can't see the point of us winning the Caribou, stretching our squad to breaking point to compete in 4 competitions for the booby prize of a Europa place. There's clubs the british sides played last season who i'm still not entirely sure where they're from. This idea makes the CWC look like a competition for the elite.

They weren't all league winners - there were 33 clubs in the European Cup.
-
sorry misread it. I'm old skool so champions league should be champions (its sort of implied by the name), Europa should be 2nd and i have no problem with cup winners, but winning the caribou cup to compete in a competition probably weaker than it.........nah.
-
What about winning an honour in itself? I agree that European qualification is little reward but the idea of a Villa captain lifting that wonderful 3 handled trophy at Wembley? In a hearbeat.
-
If there was no European qualification whatsoever I would still want to win the cup. It's a major competition. Aston Villa should be in the business of trying to win it.
Edit: basically, what Nev said.
-
yeah no problem with that. just play the kids in the conference or whatever its called. We'd probably still get to the semis with the arse in it anyway.
-
Whose idea was to make an even inferior version of the Europ League? Baby Face Infantino ? Fucking gobshite.
-
Am I the only one who quite likes the thought of returning to the good old days of 3 European tournaments?
-
I'd be fine with the return of the CWC. This is more like the Watney Cup.
-
Maybe a stepping stone to it though, who knows.🤷🏼♂️
-
Win the League Cup and then refuse to play in the corresponding European jamboree.
That should be the plan.
-
Am I the only one who quite likes the thought of returning to the good old days of 3 European tournaments?
Me too mate. The Europa League is too bloated and I miss the Cup Winner's Cup.
-
Hoping for this thread to continue after Thursday but putting out there that Villa are 25/1 to win the Cup!
Why not !
Because come Feb. 28 it will 25 years since we last won it. However it will also be 60 since years since we won the first League Cup so...
-
I would love us to win the league cup and then play the youngsters in that new European mickey mouse trophy.
-
Can a moderator combine this with the other stoke thread?
-

No need. This is the general EFL Cup thread which gets updated as we progress to the final, the other is the specific pre-match thread for the Stoke game.
-
Correct.

Interesting, seven possible teams in the quarter finals. How will that work?

I've just tried it, it mirrors fine at the moment, there's a camera filming in the car park and I've just seen James Chester walking in.

There's no sound, can't tell.

They've switched to a camera in the Holte End now. I can make out that there's people warming up in front of the North Stand, but there's a suspicious looking bloke scoping out the Holte from behind the near goal.

Oh well.

Prescient not to include Villa in the draw line-up.
40 years ago we lost to Cambridge Utd in the League Cup. That season went okay.
