We've signed a player that we didn't need. Excellent business, if I may say so.

Why don't you think we need him?

Well I'm happy with it, I'm surprised you're not though.

Cash and Lolley would be a fun double signing.

AEM was a regular in much heralded defensive improvement after the break. Gulibert also popped up again towards end of the season and helped keep the Arsenal attackers quiet.

I think Cash will be similar to Konsa. Will come in and play a few games at the start and be hit and miss and then be taken out for AEM. Hopefully will then look better when he then comes back into the team.

I watched a fair bit of Forest last season and they were a very defensively rigid team so interested how he adapts at a high level in a team who are more open going forward.

Hopefully he's a better one v one defender than Targett is.

Not the highest priority. Let’s hope he improves us.

As much as I like Guilbert, as a bloke and (on his day) a player, I am starting to wonder if he's a highlights player.

I don't really think that's a fair thing to say.  He had games where he looked very good, and then like everybody else in the squad, he had games where he was poor.  I think once the centre backs and the keeper situation was less disasterous, the whole tam looked better, including the full backs.

So are you saying that's the reason why goldie.7 doesn't think we need him? He's obviously a different player to Konsa, who is a CB who covered RB. Cash is a RM, RWB, RB and perhaps we'll play a combination.

Given Elmo's age, he won't last forever and Cash is a good prospect who should grow with the squad.

It's hard to judge signings in isolation, as we need to see the total business we do by the end of the window to properly judge it, but it does seem a slightly strange first purchase, given that other areas need more urgent strengthening.  Still, he seems highly regarded and hopefully he's just the first of a few to come in.

I can see what you are saying but like someone else said on here a day or two ago, transfers might not always get done in the order of preference.

It probably is harsh, I hope it isn't true.

He's had some great games (Arsenal etc.) I guess when I've watched some of his games back I've found myself wondering if the stand out bits of his games (speed overlapping, last ditch tackling, tenacity) cover up for the fact he's not a great attacking fullback or a good defender.

It's bit conspicuous that he didn't get a run all season, just wondering how Smith sees things.

I think it's that he had a player like Elmo who he prpbably saw as a bit more reliable, then for a few games, Konsa who he knows of old.  There's certainly enough there to see he can be a very good player though and so I hope the Cash signing doesn't mean he's off.

Guilbert flattered a lot, some great challenges & lung bursting runs but overall a bit rash & not premier league quality. Given it was his first season, he may improve & competition is never a bad thing.

A new right back may not have been the top priority but definitely an area that needed improvement & signings won't happen in priority order.

I don't know nor haven't seen anything of Cash, so I couldn't say how good he is. But I assume he's an upgrade.

Plenty of people don't think we need a CB due to the defensive improvement since lockdown (don't think we've been linked to any in last few weeks so dosen't seem a priority) so just thought same might apply to RB.

I do agree we need a long term option there as AEM won't be here in 12 months and Gulibert might not improve and we'll sell him back to France. Like others have said it would've been better if we could've got a final third signing in first but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Thought he was excellent early season, Everton home game he was brilliant up and down the line that night. Also did a nice cross for the El Ghazi goal v Burnley.

His season was similar to Engels. Good at the start then some flaws become apparent from December onwards and he had some shocking games away to likes of Southampton and I think Leicester. But then so did everyone else and likes of Luiz and Konsa improved in the run in so hopefully he'll get the chance to follow them.
