I find it strange that he ( Foster ) never did well for us, as the two towns i've lived in ( Luton and Brighton ) he's seen as a legend. Must have been a timing thing as the whole club stunk from 84 to 87.

Stop advertising Sky!

I think in the grand scheme of things regarding Enckelman the fact that he made three bad mistakes in a short period of time in three live TV games (two of them local derbies) is a big part of the story. Had none of them been shown live on SKY the media attention on him and his resulting lack of confidence which I don't believe he ever fully recovered from would have been less damaging to him and the team. Therefore I mention SKY as a valid and important part of the story.

Foster was bought by Tony Barton from Brighton around March time then in the close season Graham Turner replaced Barton and Turner transfer listed him. If I remember right we paid about £200,000 for Foster then flogged him to Luton for £70,000 six months later. We then spent about £400,000 on Paul Elliott to replace Foster. The same Paul Elliott that had lost his place in the Luton team to Steve Foster!

Wow. I always thought it was a swap deal. Amazing how two centre backs who had good careers were so useless for us. Nice one Turner ( and Doug ).

Cissokho was monumentally shit. Couldn't attack, defend, pass, run, he was clumsy and never had the ball under control.

Remarkable that he played for clubs such as Porto, Lyon, Valencia and Liverpool, Also had over £24m spent on him in transfer fees.

Was Gollini that bad? I remember him costing us a crucial goal at Leeds and Bruce number him soon after. Playing in the champions league these days and Italy.
So many dire full backs - Cuellar, De La Cruz, Beye, Hutton (in prem), Lowton...... Stevens, Shorey, Bennett, Luna, Cissokho, Richardson, Targett, Taylor

I recall we had a collection of dreadful players 84 -87,many of whom came through the youth ranks - Norton, Gallagher, Hopkins, Hunt.  We also managed to get the worst out of Martin Keown before he became a top player.  I never liked Geoff Vowden in the early 70s for some reason I can't recall, and in the late 60s we had some keepers like Withers and Hughes and Dunne who all seemed to be full of errors. In recent times I'd add Guzan to that list.  I'd also find places for Beye, Balaban, Callaghan, Kachloul, De La Cruz, Bacuna, Tonev, Sylla, Dawkins, Bowery and my latest "can't see what he offers" figure, Trezeguet.

As for managers, take your pick from Tommy Cummings, Sherwood, Turner, McNeill, Lambert, and if we're counting caretakers, McDonald and Eric Black.  Venglos was no great shakes either.

He played about half a dozen games and gave away about half a dozen goals as far as I recall. I see lots of people including Kiraly who, as far as I can remember, only ever made one error while he was with us.

I’m surprised Guzan hasn’t made anyone’s team. That season we went down the bloke spilled just about everything that came at him. The Wycombe affair was the crowning glory. Wanker.

He was, generally, quite good before that season. I met him a couple of times and he seemed decent and pretty humble. Not "a wanker". I think the players were under tremendous strain in that horrific season and several acted poorly under that intense scrutiny. Doesn't make them the Devil Incarnate.

Bacuna would be another example. He had some poor games, a whole lot of okay games and some quite good games, with some memorable goals, especially from free kicks. We have had far worse and he doesn't belong in anyone's worst ever squad.

1989

1995

Sherwood (statistically not the worst, but a twat).

Think I've blotted the worst ones from my memory, so my XI isn't comprehensive, but is a mixture of those I have the worst memories of at Villa Park, those I dislike, and those who would fill me with least confidence when I saw their names in the starting XI.

GK: Taylor

RB: Bacuna
CB: Richards
CB: Lescott
LB: Shorey

RM: Tonev
CM: Djemba Djemba
CM: Gary Gardner
LM: N'Zogbia

CF: McCormack
CF: Balaban

No way.  Pejic only played 12 games for us, before his career was ended by injury at the age of 29.  He looked to me a bloody good player.  Not fair to label him an underachiever.
