Richard Whitehead won The Cricket Society Book of the Year for 2026 - well done Sir!

Another Villa fan won it in 2022 with a book about Hutton's tour of the West Indies (fantastic book).

I can't tell if this is a bad performance from the bears, a good performance from Sussex or a tough pitch. It's probably all 3 because whilst it's not doing loads there's just enough to be awkward.

It’s also the time of year where day one conditions are very bowler friendly. Out of the nine championship games that started today, five of them have the batting side four or more wickets down, so far in those five games 27 wickets have fallen. There are two games where the batting side are 200-odd for none but they seem like exceptions.

Massive partnership there to turn that into a really good session for us. Still work to do but any batting points are a positive after 117-6 and we should have enough to get at least 250 now.

Hannon-Dalby bowled beautifully

Got the feel of a 2 maybe 2 and half day game

Feel like if we can even set a target of 200, we have a chance, but I'm not sure we will. Not sure if a bad pitch or bad batting.

I thought hte same as we came out after tea so that final session has really gone our way, lead of 217 with 5 wickets left and plenty of time in the game should, hopefully, mean some sensible batting for a few hours tomorrow and a 300+ target to defend. The pitch has definitely played worse than it looks though because there seems to be a little bit of inconsistency in the bounce which has made angled bat shots really dangerous for both teams.

Special mention for Yates, this has been a brilliant innings from him, saw the mess going on at the other end and just dug in until they started to vary things and then pushed on, really good performance.

Yates batted really well (as you'd expect from a Villa fan) and I hope he goes on to a ton tomorrow. If he does, we'll probably get the win.

Utterly brainless shot from Skipper Barnard, after he had played well. Perhaps he thought he was auditioning for England...

Decent day for the most part yesterday but the late collapse has made things more evenly matched than it should have been.

A win for the Pears at the home of cricket!  Well done.  Lategan looks a great prospect.

Indeed he does, lack of runs beyond the opening pair is still a big issue but he looks top.  Let’s see what this berk of an OS player offers now he is on board.  Hannon-Dalby has done us a great service these two games too
