It cost more than 3 points, it caused a huge set back. Momentum is important.
Why was his mistake more crucial than say McGinn missing an open goal?

The chance he had in the first half albeit with the GK to beat and he shot straight at him.

Yep, he's going to score even less than Keinan.

No the point was that we tend to focus in on GK mistakes big times whilst ignoring or reducing impact of errors made by attacking players. My comment was in response to CL’s post.

If McGinn shoots from 30 yards I class that as an open goal.

We did not recover from the goal and we have 0 points.
It had a massive impact on the game and potentially on the season.
Every one makes mistakes but the first minute of our first home game in the PL for some time against fucking Bournemouth is a monumental fuck up.
I would play Steer against Everton.

I think it’s fair to say that no one (fans, players, staff, media, etc) expected a cluster fuck like that to kick start our home campaign...but shit happens. It could be argued that Heatons mistake cost us 1 point (Luiz goal cancelled out his error) but I’m confident that he will save us more points and goal difference than Steer will over the course of the season. Let’s not throw the keeper out with the bath water with the “heat on”.

Edit: Please accept my sincere humble apologies for the very shit heating pun.

I am with Chicago on this one.  Heaton's first minute mistake was much more damaging than putting the result of a critical game in jeopardy.  When it happened and how it happened will inevitably make more difficult the achievement of early season momentum.

The basic problem is the spectre of "silly mistakes" coming back to haunt us.  It is neither wise nor acceptable to consider "silly mistakes" as some sort of rub of the green that will even even themselves out over a season.  They are caused by lack of concentration, lack of focus and lack of professionalism.  Tommy Elphick for example did not make regular "silly mistakes" because he was unlucky, he made them because he lost concentration.

A good, competent professional footballer has to have in his/her skill set the ability to think quickly and clearly under pressure.  It is every bit as important as the technical skills. .And to do it from the first whistle to the last.

I wouldn't be dropping a player after one mistake. It would be a massive knee jerk reaction and totally unnecessary. People need to calm down a bit.

Absolutely, Luiz made a major rick which cost us a goal and is being praised for his performance after that . Heaton played well after his mistake and now some people calling for Steer to replace our best keeper after one mistake is comical.
