Dougie has class, but didn't look fit to me in his second coming, not at the pace of the game.

I'd compare his situation to Tielemans' first 20 or so games, where he couldn't get a look-in ahead of Dougie.

I reckon he could get back to that level with a strong run of games in a successful team. But in terms of adding depth, he's probably not the right age, fee and wage profile for us right now.

I like Dougie and think he's made a big contribution to our development over a few years. However, once Tielemans was fit to play, he got frozen out. They never seemed to be able to play well together.
The 'Lindelhof experiment' may have finally done for him.

Good decision - we can’t afford to waste any money this transfer window

Yep, it’s the right decision. As much as I like the bloke.

I like the guy but not sure he has the bandwidth mentally to cope with Emery's demands. That's why he wanted to go before.

Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up coming back for £12m-£15m at the end of the window to be honest.

He didn't get a run of starts because he hasn't been good enough to start as soon as we were no longer ravaged by injuries. He's started 15 league games in the last 2 years.

Mainly because he, himself was ravaged by injuries.

I prefer my midfielders with technical ability rather than the stopper/physical lads but horses for courses.

His clubs have played more than 100 games in all comps over the last 2 seasons. He's started 27 and missed 28 through injury. And none of the 3 clubs seem to want to keep him, even at half the price we sold him for. I like Doug and am pleased he got the Europa send-off but we've moved on from him.

Agree with that. He hasn’t had any stand out performances since his return so I’m all for drawing a line under his time with us.

We need improvement not passengers.

Really, a Champions League club in Spain or Italy should be ideal for him. Probably not Juve, because they're c**ts (edit: and because they're not Champions League LOL), but somewhere else. Roma or something.

I don't think he's CL level any more

I agree that his fitness levels didn't look quite right, probably because he hadn't been playing that much. Thing is, he needs to be first choice to get that back and he won't be with us. A mid table team who's players aren't any better than a slightly unfit Dougie would be best, with the promise that once he does get fit he'll be a big improvement on what they have. Or a slower paced league perhaps.

Modern football has worn down my sentimentality about players - wish him well. A decent player but we need more than that now. Nice guy with a great attitude. Next...

We've moved on from Dougie.  Neat and tidy player but we need someone more progressive in there.  Been a good servant for the club when we needed him but we have better players ahead of him.

At his best he was a high end midfielder. For whatever reason he hasn’t been able to hit those heights for a couple of years. It’s a shame, and he’s one of my favourites in recent years, but I’m glad he got a proper good close to his Villa career.
