I don't want Barkley for reasons I have stated elsewhere, but the thing that is confusing me is that Iroegbunam isn't rated as good enough by some, although I think he isn't quite fully ready for Emerys CDM role just yet, but this 23 year old with one season with a relegated Serie A side is/will be?

He wasn't considered good enough/ready at the same age as Iroegbunam, but he is now the makeweight in a deal for one of the best midfielders in Europe?

I think we are getting shafted...

I was really just wondering what the difference was between Barkley and young Enzo there. If you don't want either, I mean, fair enough, but to want one and not the other as I'm certain some do (in whichever direction) strikes me as a bit bizarre.

I'd agree if Barkley hadn't been with us before. For me how things turned out last time make me wary of him because, in my opinion, he downed tools when things weren't going his way. It's not a big enough thing for me to be totally against the signing but I don't like it and, if I'm honest, I don't really see the point, especially with Enzo coming in and most people wanting a 'real' replacement for Luiz as well.

Emery chose Calum Chambers over Tim at Palace. Our squad isn’t as deep as Juventus so a player going out on loan for them in the same division and having an excellent season, is far better than a player who cannot convince the manager to play him in a dire injury crisis. Emery said very publicly it was Tim’s time to shine when the injuries and games mounted and he didn’t take his chance. He was very average in the games he played. He’s had his chance. Good luck to him.

I wouldn't touch this Argentinian player with a barge pole. Sounds like a plan D and we'll get ripped off.

What on earth are you basing that on?

Based on the fact that his glass isn't so much half empty, as smashed against a wall.

I think you’ve answered your own question with the Ireogbunam comment, he isn’t good enough, Unai worked with him all of last season and never felt he was ready to step up to the plate. There’s no guarantee this lad from Juve will be any better but until he arrives and contributes we don’t know. IMV we aren’t getting shafted, just moving on a player who isn’t good enough (in Unais view) and replacing him with someone who maybe. Our PSR position is driving this and we need to accept where we’re at.

We obviously don't now how the two make-weights will turn out, but on the face of it, based on current values, I agree.

If we had a 23 y/o who hadn't broken into our squad, we'd all be expecting him to be out the door like Tim, typically for a pretty nominal sum.  This lad is two years older than Tim and still not good enough for Juve, yet by any sensible value of Dougie we seem to be paying the equivalent of approx £30m+ for him.

However good they turn out to be under Emery, I just can't see any rationale for the maths behind this deal.

Thats pretty much where I am, I trust these lads stand a very good chance of being what we might need but the value assigned to them, given the rest of the deal, is far more than is reasonable.

Is it really that bizarre? Barkley's just had a great season in the PL so I find it easy to see why many would welcome him. I'm actually on the fence. I have a nagging concern about his attitude and can see him kicking-off again with his big sulky, red face when he gets subbed/doesn't start.

But no one has heard of this other chap and for a 23 year old, doesn't have much of a back-catalogue to go on. Yeah, the Rijkard comparison is exciting, especially if he's skinny with a decent tache but I can understand the reticence from folk in not being overly keen.

There's more assurance in what we'll get with Barkley on the pitch - presence, ability on the ball and confidence against top opposition. None of that is guaranteed with "the Barron" as Ozzjim has brilliantly christened him.

Best get used to that with Monchi. The same could be said of Nedeljković.

I don't think not wanting one or the other of Barkley or Enzo is the same at all. Barkley has been a poor player for many years now but was really good last season. I think it's understandable to think that was maybe a one off. This new lad is inexperienced and more of a complete unknown with just a little doubt about how little senior football he has played by the age of 23.

Enzo is a defensive midfielder and therefore better than any fit player we have in his position at the minute.

Barkley is an attacking midfielder and, even assuming Luiz leaves, isn't as good as Tielemans, McGinn, Rogers, Diaby or Bailey. Not that he plays winger but he would still be competing with the latter two for position as we sometimes play two wingers sometimes one.

He doesn't seem to be what we need at all, ie a tough tackling Kamara cover, and may stifle the development of Rogers (and Ramsey when he's back). Plus we have seen him before and know his strengths... and limitations.

Barkley plays deeper now. He was in the Luiz role all year for Luton.

But, but, he was rubbish at Roma (they got to the CL semi-finals) and when he went back to Sevilla (they won the Europa League twice).

We have loads of players who can play more or less where Luiz was when he played at his best. None who play where Kamara does.
