Our double player of the year in 2023, best and most consistent player over the first two thirds of last season, penalty taker and clearly an influence in the dressing room. I don't see any positives with this, he leaves a massive hole.

Everyone talks about how he tailed off after January but it was only really the last 6 or 7 weeks of the season when his form really suffered. And he was knackered.

He has been a mainstay of the team for five years, stepped up after lockdown when we needed to stay up and improved year on year after that. He always seems to genuinely love playing for us too. It's rubbish that his leaving and even more so if it is mostly driven by crappy financial rules which do nothing but protect the twatty clubs who already spent their Dosh to grow their revenue sources.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s utter shite.

I agree with that, people can try to put a positive spin on it, but it's fucking shit. If these rules weren't there we'd be laughing Juve out of town with this offer for one of our best players. It's utter shit.

And if these rules weren't there then Newcastle would have spent £600m last summer, we'd (maybe) have finished fifth and DL, Martinez and Watkins would all be looking for a move this summer.

Counter-factuals work in more than one way.

For all we know Doug wants to leave. It's not like he hasn't wanted to before.

That's quite a leap from the example of us having to sell a key player to bring us under a set figure decided on by the clubs a while back, which hasn't changed with inflation etc, despite having the season of our lives.

Maybe this, maybe that, maybe the other. The speculation that seems the most likely is that we HAVE to sell to meet these rules, which in their current form are shit.

It's not a leap to suggest that the current shit rules being changed to benefit us, might benefit other rival clubs more.

He was very good in 2020, dipped a little bit in 2021 and regained his mojo under StevieMe decided he wasn't good enough. Brilliant under Emery. Went off boil badly last 2 months.

I'd say 5 years at a club nowadays is a very long time, his nationality will always give him an elevated level of notice.

May be it is for the best all round if he leaves now, we get the better end of the financials fee and he moves to one of the very few clubs on the continent who are actually bigger than Villa but no threat to us.

I know sacrilidge to some but it is always likely one big name would leave this season due to the financials

Brazilian players to me have always tended to have a higher profile. Although global scouting networks are a bit more sophisticated.

No, but to suggest Newcastle would've spent 600m, we'd finish 5th and have to sell all our top players is quite an OTT doomsday scenario.

You believe there is a plausible scenario that if the spending rules didn't exist (which is what you're saying is causing us a problem), Newcastle wouldn't be spending hundreds of millions of pounds in an attempt to finish in the Champions League places?

I do, as I've said before I reckon the amount of money they're willing to throw at Newcastle is a lot lower than people expect because of the impact of Neom which I beleive is their real priority.

I'm saying the shit rules that are forcing us to accept a shit offer for one of best players are shit rules. You've said the rest.

Because you appear to be oblivious of the fact that those rules aren't constraining only us.
