Didn’t really get on the ball at all tonight, I know we struggled to maintain possession but I didn’t think he did anything really and certainly nowhere near his usual standards. I didn’t see it as trying to do too much to cover someone else, he just wasn’t involved and the game passed him by.

a) of course he showed for the ball, it's not a pub league game, he was shadowed by two men, and b) it's very hard to physically best any two men by yourself. The problem was he felt he had to do it alone because they clearly don't instinctively trust the Donk in tight situations, and in trying to be two players he became less than one.
