To me, he's just not a holding/defensive midfielder. It seems to be it's all he's ever played since he's been here. There's more to him I reckon.

It's been the problem all along, Marvelous proved the point, get a genuine defensive midfielder playing well and we improve across the park, yet we continue to put square pegs in to round holes, Luiz or McGinn neither are a solution they become the problem.

Well he appears to be a quality player but what’s his strongest position?

I for one think he is a very good player. . Think he is very good defensively when he track oppositional players that have the ball, very good (world class) in holding the ball in mdifield and easily can pick an accurate pass and also have the awaerness about the play and players posisions to  make him a an stand out player more often then not (yes, seems to disappear a bit sometimes but that can be about how we as a are playing also). I would put him as a number 7. We have Mc ginn there and we dont have a number 6 so he play as nr 6. He might not be physical strong enough to play as a 6 in the english game.

Yep, agreed. Need a big performance from those pair today, if starting. They've both been dreadful for a while now.

McGinn was superb in the FA Cup game at old trafford. Douglas Luiz has played out of position in the three years he has been here. Push him into a role where he gets forward and he would be more effective.

The missing piece is a defensive midfielder behind them. They would both improve drastically if we had that player.

I've always seen Luiz as a foot on the ball, driving forward type of player. Not a great passer or tackler but a calming influence.

You need to ask Alisha Lehmann.

A good summary I’d say. On his day he’s superb at this, he’s not bad at winning it back either, but he’s just not the enforcer we need in front of the back four.

I still like him, but he’s really not the player to play in front of the defence when our full backs are so far forward. Him and McGinn seem to be really struggling with this role.

Dougie has quality in possession but plays his own game. If he's being imposed upon some if that flair is lost .
Has a good passing range and has ability on the ball in being able to flip it and back heel with footy skillz not always seen by your regular player certainly at dm
His tempo is one thing that needs a little push but we don't really play high tempo these days or press on to the opposition back line as a unit. The deeper sitting I think frustrates him.
I agree with others who like to see him up the pitch higher.
I think a different system or one certainly with more flexibility to rotate in midfield is more suited but we unlikely to get that within Gerrard system of inverted full backs. These days Dougie has to go round covering the full backs and pivot the midfield.

Yeah when he was starting for Brazil a year ago they were playing him as an 8.

DM and then 2 out of 3 of Doug, McGinn and Ramsey is most logical way to do it but seems Nakamba injury has messed everything up and since then Gerrard just reverted to what DS did for central midfield with the same inconsistant results.

I think his mind is elsewhere now and he won't sign a new deal, ironic considering recent off the pitch developments as you'd think that would settle him down more unless Lehmann will move on from our ladies team aswell.

We've surely got to sign a DM in the summer. Luiz is better as an 8.

He can be what he likes, just at another club please.
