Are we still at risk of Man City taking him back?

He's really matured into his role with us. He always showed he was capable but I think it took him time to adjust to the tempo here. He's been fantastic for quite a while now.
He didn't have a pre season with us last year either

Are we still at risk of Man City taking him back?

Almost certainly they will next summer.

So next summer we may have to replace him and Barkley? That’s going to be big boots to fill.

He might not want to go. Pep will be gone by then and Sam Allardyce will be in charge so it might not suit his game.

I read somewhere that if he signs a new contract at Villa (with a hefty pay-rise no doubt) the buy-back clause with Man City is erased.

We could send them Lansbury and call it quits.

Interesting, I'd always assumed that the contract for the sale of the player, and the players own employment contract would be two completely different legal documents.

Why would he want to step down a level?

They would be. I don't see how him agreeing a new contract would affect the deal that was agreed with Man City.

A lot may depend on how much we push on this year and more importantly the player himself. If he's in the Brazil squad he may not want to risk sitting on Citeh's bench the season before a World Cup.

I've a feeling ( probably just naive optimism ) that Man City will let us buyout the clause, because they'll have signed other players and need to appease ffp.

Pretty sure that the only way the clause is removed is if Man City agree to it. Or it expires obviously.

He has a real knack of being in the right spot to nip the ball away or block passes. He's no midfield destroyer in terms of big tackles, but boy does he make a difference in breaking up play.

John Percy mentioned a while back we were working on three new contracts; Mings, McGinn and Luiz. With two of the three done, I imagine the last of those is the most complex.
