I doubt if Pep is impressed thus far. Smith needs to take Luiz out of the starting eleven. When Conor came back at Norwich and against Brighton we looked much better. But he was dropped again soon after.

That’s because Hourihane was as anonymous as Luiz. I have a suspicion his senior call up for Brazil was somewhat playing on his mind and he didn’t want to get injured, the big fanny.

Newcastle might suit Hourihane better, likely to be a tight game and his ability to get goals and assists could be crucial. Luiz failure to stop, through fair or foul means, Traore is a dropping offence.

Hourihane was diabolical against Liverpool and is much more Connor Hologram of late.

If any cab is next off the rank it's Lansbury at the moment

He isn't solid enough to be playing where he currently is.

I'm struggling to understand where he's supposed to be playing. Marvelous should be our defensive midfielder but Luiz seems to be doing the same job but without the energy. He plays like it's a pre-season friendly in 40º heat. Having both adds nothing to our team and is just another passenger for most of the game.

Definitely, although I worry about his stamina as he always seems knackered after 60 minutes - but of course that may be down to lack of games.

He's a tidy little player with a good shot but if he becomes a regular in the Man City side in the future i'll shit in my hat and eat it.

We still haven’t bought that elusive midfielder that really kicks arse and mops up.

It'd be a miracle if he got his boots on without twisting his ankle.

I think the problem in the fist half was that no one knew what their job was supposed to be. Trez and AEG seemed to sometimes want to press their wide centre backs and sometimes follow the wing backs but neither made it clear which job they were doing at any point so Douglas and McGinn were floating indecisively between holding the centre of the pitch and helping out the fullbacks and whichever they chose we ended up being overloaded somewhere else.

A big part of the change at half time (I think the game was pretty even in the 2nd half) was that all of them seemed to get clarification on what their priorities were and everyone looked much more at ease with the job they were doing.

I don't know where the fault for it lies but it's the first time under Smith that I've seen s start a game looking like we don't have a plan.

That’s what Nakamba’s role is.

Still think we need someone else alongside Marcelous to help him out and make us a but more solid.  I've reserved judgement a bit on Douglas, as he didn't have a proper pre season.  Looks a bit too casual and off the pace at the moment though.
