Interesting reading this from Pep: clicktown

Quote
“The manager from Brazil (Tite) and myself know more than the guys who decide he is not able to play. I am so sad and disappointed for Douglas because he could help us, play with us. He has shown many good things in training sessions and the reason why we spent a lot of money to buy him is because he is a player with a huge capacity to play for us.”

Sounds like they will more than likely activate the buy back clause if he turns out to be as good for us as much as they rate him. All we can do is see how this pans out and enjoy watching an amazing player no matter how long he is with us for.

Like others have said, if he stays one season and keeps us up he’s earned us another £100million. If he then goes back to Man City for £15 million, we’re £85 million better off and Dean/Jesus etc have had a year to find an adequate replacement.
Difference is, I trust them at this point to do that.

I think there will be a tidy profit in there for us if he is brilliant. I read that often the buy back goes up each summer after the transfer in these kind of deals. I think it will likely be a couple of seasons before Man City come back for him anyway, so we can enjoy him while we have him and scout alternatives in the meantime.

If Man City buy him back, we could just go and get Phillips when Leeds inevitably mess up.

Suspect he'll be announced today in tandem with the away kit launch which is happening over Stateside

Isn't this buy back clause an example of what they specifically said we would not do? Develop players for other clubs?

A bit like a loan except it costs us £15m of it doesn't go well?

Not saying I don't want us to get him but this seems to be massively contrary to the sort of deal they said they wanted.

Depends upon the clause really. I would expect that we will make a profit on this deal even after taking wages into account. It’s not ideal though, I agree.

The only way it costs us 15mn is if he bombs and ends up leaving us on a free at the end of his contract.  I expect that is highly unlikely based on how highly rated he is....

They do want him back to replace Fernandinho and also Rodri. They double up on the buy back clause. They would play him now if they could. It isn't a bad fall back position when your other target is a bloke Leeds are taking the piss on a transfer fee for.

It's obviously a ploy for Citeh to get around the work permit issue, but it sounds like a win-win.  We get a potentially top notch midfielder for at least a season, we'll get our money back plus, presumably,  some profit, Citeh get their player back.  We also have at least a year to source a replacement or two.  Only downside is if he turns out to be shite, which seems unlikely.  I know it isn't ideal to be developing other team's players but we get something out of it and we shouldn't cut off our noses to spite our faces.  Loans  last year is the reason why we are in the PL int he first place.

If he is shite they buy him back anyway at cost price is how I would have  structured such a deal. Fuck it, he looks good, let's watch him play.

Let’s get him signed before we start worrying about buy back clauses or whatever.
Its not a done deal yet.
