I watched him in action against Cagliari. He was the deepest lying CM. The game was played at near walking pace and his job seemed to be recycling the ball and ticking everything over. He did this well but was rarely troubled defensively. He brought a good save out of the keeper and generally looked decent in a very bland game.

It seems like they're to push him into that deeper role, it's almost like they didn't watch him for the last 18months and notice he's far better when he has a bit of a license to find space.

I don't care. I don't pine for him, I don't dislike him, nor begrudge him a move there. We upgraded, I think, and saved ourselves financially in doing so.

We miss some of his passing and set pieces, but not his petulance, and whilst his price seemed cheap, I don't think it matters.

"...if it were true that Douglas Luiz is a player who has little desire to train and to commit, Juventus should have known about it in time, not discovered it once he arrived in Turin”.

Well I very much doubt they would have seen it as I can't see Emery accepting it. Although I guess alternatively it is maybe why Emery would have been more willing to let him go? Pure conjecture. I'm spitballing.

Edit: Sorry, forgot, OR they don't know shit and the article is bollocks.

I still think he was told he was moving and I think that linked to his drop in form.

I dont think he wanted to move - particularly as his gf was here.  To all intense and purposes it does look like it was part of a firesale for FFP, like Tim and Omar(?) to raise the money needed

He was offered a contract extension towards the end of 2023 IIRC.

When they couldn't agree/ DL declined we decided to cash in.

There was a lot of chat about Monchi going to Barcelona towards the end of last season to negotiate for their centre half Ronald Araujo. The cost of doing just a straight deal there would've been prohibitive, so it's likely DL was part of the conversation.

I still maintain the eventual deal we did was a poor one, even allowing for the circumstances. He was our best outfield player last year.

He's a good player. If Juventus can't get the best out of him some other side will. Just hope it's not the likes of West Ham, Tottingham or that sort.

Even with not signing the contract extension then I'm not sure he *definitely* wanted out.

Most players and their agents won't agree to the first deal offered.

He would've known as well he was in a stronger position the longer he left it - and if we had a poor year this season and he decided to move this summer - it would be easier.

From everything the player himself said he sounded like he was looking forward to taking the next step in the CL with us.

Nah, I don't buy it sorry. He wanted to move on and I don't blame him, but I think he'll continue to struggle to hit the heights he only did here under Emery.

Especially with out big Boub next to him. Old Best Western McKennie isn't in the same quality.

I did wonder if his streaming antics might have upset Emery slightly. In one stream he had all the players around his house including some climbing through the window, and also stated on stream some team news about injuries etc.

I'm sure sometime towards the end of last season Unai also about some players not as committed as they should be. The obvious thought was for Duran but I also thought it might have been Luiz then due to the massive drop in form.

I imagine that he wasn't desperate to leave and we weren't desperate to force him out. But at the same time, he didn't mind moving on and we had obvious PSR benefits if he was open to it.

I think most footballers these days accept that they're a job where they get very well paid, and being shunted around from club to club is fine as long as the clubs involved make it worth their financial (and to some extent, sporting) while.

He's probably fine with it all. We're definitely fine with it - for all the discussion in the summer about whether Onana is an upgrade or a downgrade, I'm 100% certain that Emery sees him as an upgrade. If it turns out that Juventus want to move him on at a loss in a year or two, I'm pretty sure we'd be interested.

Might have been a factor, it was only because of Dougie that I discovered there was such a thing as Twitch.
