One of my favourite Luiz moments and it will stick with me was his work in the goal at Brighton (1-1) in the great escape season. Brilliant pass to set the goal up , cue bedlem behind the the goal.

Really improved after Covid and played a big part in us staying up.

Deano's failure to bring in a CDM meant Doug was often played out of position.

His form dipped under Gerrard (whose didn't?) but for almost a year under Unai, played in the right place, his form was like a dream.

It seems pretty clear that his failure to sign the new contract made it easy for the owners to decide which major player would depart this summer to balance the books.

Apparently they’ve taken him off corners because he keeps shooting from them.

The deal seems abit strange as we loaned both our ones out and dougie cant get a start there. I know it was needed for FFP but so far hasnt benefitted either club for the players coming in

I think it was a straightforward enough deal as far as Juventus were concerned. It just seems that so far, he hasn't played well enough to get much of a run for them. I don't know much about their other options, eg if it's like Tielemans for us last year where he had an established pairing in front of him, or if it's just that Doug has continued his most recent Villa form with them, ie shite.

They also bought Thuram and Koopmeiners in the summer, Thuram is better at the defensive bit than DL and Koopmeiners is better at the attacking bit. And they have Locatelli who does the bit-of-both stuff that DL used to do for us, so there's no really much of a role for him. All three of those are easily DL's equal in terms of how good they are.

The slightly odd one is how McKennie is still getting games for them ahead of him - given they were so keen to give him to us in order to sign DL.

I thiught mckennie was the player keeping dougie out ( i might be wrong) but if thats the case abit if a worry for doug as mckennie is shite

Perhaps he needs a Kamara next to him.

Also, he was apparently really bad against Empoli the other week, and has been hung out to dry by Motta in the Italian press this week for his performance.

Thats pretty poor if true. I do wonder if dougie wishes he stayed here.

Maybe, maybe not. Different people react differently to different things.

I can easily believe that the thing that will make DL better is "pull your socks up and be better" over "keep going champ, you got this".

On his record so far, Motta appears to have the knack of judging this stuff pretty well.

Going by Vidagany's comments Dougie was going to be sold this summer whatever happened.

They were just a bit miffed at the price they had to settle for.

I don't take the fact that he wasn't prepared to sign a new contract earlier in the year as proof positive he wanted out. And it's not as if had we waited until next summer when he only had one year left on his existing agreement that we'd have been a whole lot worse off - going by the deal we eventually did complete.

But Villa stopped listening to me on financial matters a long time ago.

Watch him have his one good game of the season against us.
