So the only way to make him stay is by paying him more money, is that the only ambition we can show him?

One would suspect he’s not one of our highest earners and if I’d played as well as he has, then I would be expecting to at least be a close match to Mings in terms of earnings. I fully expect us to move hell and earth to improve his contract, as I’m sure most would agree that he’s an absolute class act.

They can't spend any of that though. And the other thing about a new contract is we can put a nice hefty buy out clause in, so if somebody does come knocking we can take them to the cleaners. £100m should do it.

I'd rather just no buyout clause. £100 million  won't look that ridiculous in a few years if he's established himself in the England team. Man U paid £80 million for Maguire, and he's very average.

Exactly, given his current form I'm sure Esri is well aware of his worth to the club.

As an aside, this talk of Konsa and maybe Cash getting international call ups made me wonder if we had ever had a goalkeeper and back four who were all internationals. We have. Bonus to whoever can name all five from the most recent Villa team that had this accolade.

I think you need to be more precise in your question setting then! Did you mean 'current' internationals?

It's the right way of doing it.

He'll have come in from the Championship on a modest (by PL standards) wage. From memory, he wasn't even a regular in the Brentford first team at the time.

He's taken his chance and then some.

No problem ponying up the £s for players who have contributed the way he and Jack have.

No, just internationals. You're always an international once you've been one, I think. Like President of America.

I think four of the five would have been current internationals the time.

Edit: just checked. Three out of the five, another had recently retired from international football.

Hutton, Chester and Jedinak all correct. The former was playing left back and the latter, ludicrously, centre-half. So you have a goalkeeper and right back to get.
