Didn't the original playoffs feature the 3rd from bottom top flight team and then 3 from the old second division. I remember Charlton beating Leeds in the late 80s

At St Andrews. And Middlesbrough beat Chelsea over two legs in 1988.

In a lot of cases I prefer that sort of system but when the higher league has such a huge financial advantage it wouldn't work.

The Chelsea Boro game - was that the one with a mini riot after the game? Chelsea pitch invasion?

Indeed it was. And I think the Leeds v Charlton game was played on the anniversary of the riot. There were about 15,000 there and Leeds took 13,500.

I was living in London at the time and it was a bank holiday game - Chelsea were one nil down from the first game, Nevin scored for Chelsea cant think who got Middlesborough's goal.  Biggest pitch invasion I have ever seen ( Chelsea.  )  One of the reasons why I am so against the play offs.

Not so sure Paul.  Cardiff against Leeds or Sheff Utd over two legs would be a tight one to call.

we need a point to guarantee 5th. I think a poit against Leeds might suit both sides and I think rotating half the first team makes a lot of sense.

I dont see Norwich posing the same risks to our teams shins...

I vaguely remember this game as it was one of the rare televised matches back then - was it Bernie Slaven?

We may well not need another point to guarantee 6th.  Derby are playing on the Saturday and if they fail to win, we are guaranteed 5th place.

I still hope that we rotate a few players.  We have a good squad and it is a good opportunity to have a look at some of the fringe players.

In fact, I wouldn't start any of the players who started on Monday.

Steer

Hutton  Tuanzebe  Elphick  Hause

Lansbury  Hourihane

Any of the outfield players then.  I wouldn't be bothered if Steer didn't start either.

I'm sure there's an EFL rule that forbids teams from making wholesale changes for this very reason

Didn't Huddersfield do the exact same thing 2 years ago?  Blues stayed up on the back of it.

I would argue that there is no point having a squad if you can't use it to suit your own needs.

Worst case scenario, rest 5 at Leeds and 5 against Norwich & go through the motions.  The ultimate goal is to go up and if we can turn a 46 game season into effectively a 44 game season then it has to work in our favour
