It’s a pretty shit state of affairs FFP has created where clubs are incentivised to sell academy players who have been nurtured for years, probably fans of the club itself, one of the few remaining romantic aspects to the game, just to meet some arbitrary financial metric.

This is sensible as it stops clubs racking up debts to fund losses and risk the owners walking away. You can lose £5m p.a max but this can increase by £30m p.a. with owner equity input (i.e. not debt) so £35m p.a. in total. This is measured over a 3 year rolling period so £105m p.a. in total. As Everton found out if you have a really bad year, it will take 3 years for this to flow through. For what its worth I agree the limits should increase with inflation/similar but that should be the owners equity amounts.
