Of all Gerrard's crimes, stripping Mings of the captaincy must be the worst. Shameful.

Not to mention really stupid.

I think it really jolted the squad and not in a good way. I think McGinn looked embarrassed about the whole thing at the time.

What was he thinking ???
I reckon it was about Gerard's own ego. He wanted to prove himself a big man by taking down an icon.

It did hasten his demise
So all things worked together for good

I’m so pleased to have him back and it was great to see him play like that last night after such a terrible injury.

He’s a Villa legend in my eyes, from the moment he arrived here he’s been such an inspirational person to have around, on and off the pitch. A great player and such a likeable man.

I missed his first game back after injury and I was really gutted to read about his error, it took the shine off his comeback. Some of the stick he got was awful.

18 months left - summer 2026.

Thanks Dave

I do wonder if that will be it with him or they will give him a year extension

Let's see him put together a run of games before contract talks.

I think it's more likely that he just didn't really rate Mings and was going to phase him out of the team (hence the signing of Carlos), so wanted a club captain that he expected to be in the team more often than not.

It was just absolute madness from Gerrard. They obviously had a big falling out in Aus that pre season. Our defence got destroyed first game of the season and he had to go back cap in hand and put Mings back in the team. Carlos got injured I think v Everton the second game in? Carlos came with a big reputation but Mings is a far superior centre back.

I think missing pretty much his entire first season in England had a massive impact on Carlos and he's never really forced himself into the team as a regular starter since, largely because Konsa went to another level very quickly after Emery arrived.

Yep, he was clearly aware that Tyrone was a popular, accomplished, intelligent, thoughtful, sensitive, experienced, well loved and respected individual.
And then there was Steven F Gerrard.

That might have been his plan and so be it. That’s his job. It’s the whole “he has to look me in the eye bollocks” that stood out for its stupidity and arrogance. Tyrone Mings is the last person I would question in terms of determination and commitment. Steven Gerrard can royally fuck off.

I really like him but the word legend gets bandied about too easily.

We've had some excellent Centre Backs over the years.

Evans
McGrath
Ehiogu
Southgate
Laursen
Mellberg
Terry

Would we hold Mings in similar regard?

Based on what they did for Villa, I think we'd hold him in significantly higher regard than Terry at the very least.

As a leader and all-around good guy, yes. As a player, he is notch below most of those.

Is he? I'd say, given the bit of the league we're trying to compete in these days (not to mention the quality of this league compared to the 90s, say) he's easily competitive in that company.
