He’s a far superior defender than Pau.

Not sure he is. He’s more physically dominant, I don’t know if that’s better per se.

And on the subsequent point Risso, the bit I can’t square is why it all falls on Torres. He has been part of the defence that’s been ropey, but he was also part of the one that got us to top of the league. Accepting form fluctuates, but it suggests he’s not hopeless.

I'm surprised he hasn't tried playing Tyrone in between Konsa and Torres yet. That way enables the full backs to push on, which has been a problem recently. Also think he should try Watkins in his old position wide on the left with Duran in the middle. Ollie will likely score more cutting in or running behind.

It doesn't all fall on Torres. But he's been the main constant in the middle, with Konsa and Carlos being used at different times. And he seems to be found defensively wanting every single game. Not always with out-and-out mistakes, but just be being not physical enough and badly positioned. I think there's a chance we'd improve if Mings came in for him instead, because he's got a lot of attributes that Torres lacks. He's not perfect of course, but there's no way we should have a worse defensive record than the likes of Palace and Everton.

Watkins won't try a leg if moved to the left. Think his performances have improved in recent weeks, certainly from his displays at Spurs or Liverpool.

Yep, I like Ty but his absence has enhanced his rep. He had a good run in Unai’s initial time at the club, but his has plenty of big mistakes in him. Pau is the current scapegoat for some, but I suspect many of those same people will be getting on Ty’s back within a few weeks if he starts playing regularly.

He brings different attributes, but he’s not better than Pau. He’d be exposed as well by our non-existent midfield as it is currently.

You might be right, you might not. But an absolute certainty is that this defence with Torres has been conceding two goals a game for the best part of a year, and Saturday was a perfect example of why. It's not like we're suggesting Hause comes in for Torres. If you keep making the same mistakes, surely at some point you have to try something else? Because every week Emery says they're working on it, and every week the same things keep happening. If Unai doesn't try something else, it's going to cost him his job.

Average of 1.69 this season and 1.61 last. The 2024 part of last season was 1.70 and it was 1.84 after Kamara got injured in February.

I think it falls on Torres on here because posters have repeated endlessly the idea that ‘Konsa is our best centre-half’ as if it’s a fact, when in reality he’s only been really good there alongside Mings.

Mate, I think the days about arguing over the make up of the defence are long gone. Whoever plays, they're all atrocious. It's like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

I'd definitely be giving Mings a start on Wednesday though. Whether that's with Konsa and Cash, or Carlos and Konsa, I'm not that bothered.

I'm in the play-all-three camp.

Emery isn't going to change his style of intricate,  heart stopping, passing out from the back. It's a bit of a shit show currently but the idea he's going to shore things up, go back to basics, just isn't going to happen. I don't think we should. What next? Bring Chris Wilder in as technical advisor to our new tactic?

I'm being a bit glib but we need to our mojo back somehow and reach the standards we're capable of. I have faith Emery will drag us out of this lull. So confident I'm willing to suffer at least another two batterings.

Those days are over for me mate. Fed up of facts being countered with abstract concepts. I feel like a scientist arguing with a load of religious nutters with ‘beliefs’.

I think Mings V Torres depends on the opposition. I'd definitely play Mings against Forest for example.

Feels like a problem we have to patch up until we can buy a better right sided defender.  Find the best option until January snd get somebody in pronto (ie the start of the window).

If Mings plays tonight hopefully he remembers he is playing football not rugby!

Well done Tyrone, particularly strong in the second half.
