I think it was definitely a case of him picking a fight with the incredibly popular club captain to try to stamp his authority on the club, particularly given he had a pretty lukewarm reception.

He's been absolutely instrumental in getting us from one of our lowest ebbs to the fringes of European qualification. I'd say probably after Jack our he's been our single most important player in that period. A talisman. Awesome.Without doubt I'd say he is already the most important signing we have made in the last 30 years. After we'd been left with one fit CB by Potato Head and were probably drifting towards another season in the Championship it was Mings signing that changed things. We almost certainly wouldn't have been promoted without him, and would be nowhere near where we are now.Of all the crap we put up with from Gerrard, his treatment of Mings was the most unforgivable for me and why I love to imagine what Steven Me is thinking as he watches Mings playing the best football of his life under one of the best managers world football. It marked his card for me. If nothing else it smacked of a rookie trying to force his authority and in reality just creating unnecessary problems for himself. Our kid said the other day he wondered if there was a race element to it

I'd agree on the rookie manager trying to force his authority on his captain, guilty of listening too much to the likes of Souness, Keane etc. Perhaps something went down on the summer tour too, right from the Bournemouth game something just seemed off with the players and really Gerrard should have been let go after the diabolical defeat at Palace soon after. Maybe Carlos was going to be the next Maldini in terms of playing out from the back but Gerrard completely mismanaged that situation with a very popular player. I think he was on borrowed time really from that.

I think he was on borrowed time really from that.Ive known someone a very long time, who through work knows someone who in turn knows Gerard…..I know how this sounds…Anyway, this ITK (or not) said Gerard has admitted to those he knows, he massively f**ked up at Villa. His idea was to break certain players down and then try to and build them back up and mould them into what he wanted. Apparently he didn’t appreciate how tight Mings was/is with McGinn, Watkins and Martinez, and how in turn these players are the key to the dressing room and the whole thing started to unravel for him quickly from pre season onwards. Might be absolute nonsense, but kind of has a ring of truth about it to me, but who knows.

Might be absolute nonsense, but kind of has a ring of truth about it to me, but who knows. That day at Palace, after going ahead, the way the players downed tools really suggested serious problems. Tactically Gerrard was all over the place too. Likes of Cash bombing forward sending a series of shite crosses into Watkins up against maybe three defenders, getting constantly caught for numbers on the counter with likes of McGinn. Emery tactically owned EtH in his first game and hasn't really looked back.
Not only does he have plenty in the bank with us he has the keys to the vault. He's been absolutely fantastic since the moment he joined us and his desire to play for this club has been clear to all. Not only that but he's a fantastic captain and example and he deserved the backing he got from the support and probably team mates over the old manager. One of our best 5 signings in the last 10-15 years.
