I don't think Maguire has managed to avoid the calamity moniker.

Maybe, but certainly not as much as is merited. Truly shocking player that is a back-up at Man U ... and an ever-present for Southgate's England.  ???

That might be a stretch too far to be fair.

Yes, Gerrard unnecessarily created an issue for himself which didn't need to happen, and his time in charge went completely to shit, but any suggestion of racism is out of order. He didn't seem to have a problem with Young, Kamara or any other of our other black players.

Our other black players weren't in the media talking about BLM. I think Gerrard wasn't a fan of what Tyrone did in his spare time.

See also Graeme Sourness and his criticism.

There are a great number of people in this country who have no problem with people of other races as long as they shut their mouths and know their place.

There might be. Any evidence whatsoever that this is a stick to beat Gerrard with though?

No, but in the absence of a sporting or in any way logical reason for doing what he did people will speculate.

The only reason I could fathom that was due to the size of his ego, Gerrard wanted to bring Mings down a peg or two. I don't believe it was anything other than that. Tyrone is immensely popular both on and off the pitch and I think he was jealous.

It sounds ridiculous but has anyone else got a better explanation for that look me in the eye cobblers?

I tend to think it was that, but it was clumsy as fuck and the point where any credit he had with the majority of fans disappeared.

I think it was definitely a case of him picking a fight with the incredibly popular club captain to try to stamp his authority on the club, particularly given he had a pretty lukewarm reception.

Gerrard was billy big bollocks, tried to show off in a playground fight and rightly got shown up for the inadequate bully he is.

Thankfully, we got well and truly done by Fulham, and Sawiris lost his shit.

It did smack of small dog syndrome.
But to be honest Mings and McGinn are playing as well/better than they ever have, so perhaps too much is made of wearing the armband (or not) anyway.

I think it was the equivalent of someone who gets sent to prison and on the first day finds the hardest bastard in there and lamps them to send a message.

Unfortunately for Stevie Mee, it backfired badly.

I think Nev's hit the nail on the head. After a pretty good start, the new manager bounce wore off and the season fizzled out pretty badly. I don't think anybody would have blamed if he'd just announced a new captain and left it at that, as obviously a lot of new managers want to pick their own man. The mistakes he made were a) choosing John McGinn, who was in terrible form, b) picking a dog's arse of a team against Bournemouth and losing and c) getting riled up by the previously unheard off BBC WM reporter, letting his guard down and making the stupid remarks about Mings.

If he'd picked Martinez as captain, we'd won the game, and he'd kept his trap shut, nobody would have batted an eye lid. Lots of people were saying Chambers of all people deserved a start after pre-season.

I agree, it's a bollocks thing in football really. So it's odd that he chose to make a big deal out of it, though I imagine he places more value in it than most because he thinks being captain is super important because he was captain and he was super important.

I'm sure sections of our fanbase aren't fans of Mings' social commentary either, have heard 'he should stick to football' in the Holte before now.

It's good that the form he's in leaves no one with the excuse to make those comments now.

Gerrard was kind to minority and ethnic  people. After all he  made McGinn captain.
